CIVE 5106/2021 Assignment No.

10.2 A simplified model of an automobile is shown in Figure P10.2. The characteristics of

the system is also identified in the figure. Obtain the frequencies and mode shapes of
vibration of the vehicle. The automobile is traveling across a rough road. Uneven joints
located every 16m on the road pavement cause vibration of the vehicle in the second mode.
Calculate the speed of the automobile. If a passenger in the vehicle is not to experience any
acceleration, where should he be seated.

10.3 A motor weighing 100 lb is mounted on two springs as indicated in Figure P10.3. The
stiffness of each spring is 25 lb/in. The radius of gyration of the motor with respect to a
horizontal axis through the center of mass G and perpendicular to the plane of the paper is
4.00 in. Two 25 lb forces are applied and suddenly removed as follows: (a) 25 lb down at
each A and B; (b) 25 lb down at A, up at B; (c) 50 lb down at B only. Determine the resulting
motion of the motor for each case.

10.9 For the frame shown in Figure P10.9, obtain a Rayleigh damping matrix that will give
5% of critical damping in each of the 1st and 3rd modes. What is the resulting damping
ratio in the second mode?

11.11 A train made up of 3 cars of weight 60,000 lb each connected by coupling springs of
stiffness 15,000 lb/in. are released by a shunting engine and roll freely along a track
(Figure P11.11). Determine the mode shapes and frequencies of vibration of the system by
using vector iteration with shift.

12.3 The frame shown in Figure P12.3 is subjected to a lateral harmonic load 𝑝0 sin Ωt at
the top floor level, where p0 = 45 kN and Ω = 5𝜋⁄3rad/s. Derive expressions for the
displacements at each floor level of the frame. Plot the modal contributions to the top floor
displacement as well as the total top floor displacement as a function of time for the first
1.5 seconds of response. Find the maximum displacement of the top floor during this
period and the time at which the maximum occurs. Neglect damping. The frequencies and
mode shapes are as given below

𝜔1 = 7.995, 𝜔2 = 18.419, 𝜔3 = 26.891 rad/s
