Homework 2 (Due 10/14)

1. For environmental protection, the power needs of household applications are
essential to be considered. Please calculate your monthly electric usage based
on the number of kilowatt-hours (in your dormitory or own house) and evaluate
how about electric bill you need to pay for that (based on 3 NTD/ kilowatt-hours).
For instance, a hair dryer has power consumption ~0.5 kW. It costs 0.25 NTD for
ten-minute usage.

2. In your lab, a DC voltage source is 70V with no load connected to the source and
60 V when loaded with a 20 Ω resistor.
(a) What is the Thévenin equivalent circuit for the DC voltage source?
(b) What is the relation between the measured voltage with load, V0 / without
load, Vth, and load resistor RL?

3. Please find the voltages for all nodes in the following circuit (10%):
Verify your solution in LTSPICE/PSPICE (10%)

4. The current in the 50 mH inductor for the following circuit is known to be 100 mA
for t < 0. The inductor voltage for t ≥ 0 is given by the expression
vL(t) = 2e−100t V, 0+ ≤ t ≤ 100 ms
vL(t) = – 2e −100(t – 0.1) V, 100 ms ≤ t < ∞
Sketch vL(t) and iL(t) for 0 ≤ t < ∞.

5. The initial voltage on the 0.5 μF capacitor shown in following circuit is −10 V. The
capacitor current is given by the expression: 50e-2000t mA for t≥0.
(a) How much energy, in joules, is stored in the capacitor at t = 200 μs?
(b) How much energy, in joules, is stored in the capacitor for t = ∞.

6. The current in the following circuit is known to be

io = 5e−5000t (2 cos 4000t + sin 4000t) A for t ≥ 0+.
(a) Plot i0(t), v1(t) and v2(t) within t=±1ms.
(b) What is v1(0+) and v2(0+)

7. The self-inductances of two magnetically coupled coils are 72 mH and 40.5 mH,
respectively. The 72 mH coil has 250 turns, and the coefficient of coupling
between the coils is k=2/3. The coupling medium is nonmagnetic. When coil 1 is
excited with coil 2 open, the flux linking only coil 1 is 0.2 as large as the flux
linking coil 2 (P21=5P11).
(a) How many turns does coil 2 have?
(b) What is the value of P2 in nanowebers per ampere?
(c) What is the value of P11 in nanowebers per ampere?
(d) What is the ratio (P22/P12)?

8. Please find the curves of the current, voltage, and instantaneous power for the
following conditions (20%):
𝑣(𝑡) = 𝑉𝑚 cos(𝜔𝑡 + 𝜃𝑣 ) (V)
𝑖(𝑡) = 𝐼𝑚 cos(𝜔𝑡 + 𝜃𝑖 ) (A)
Also indicate the average power.
(a) 𝑉𝑚 = 1, 𝐼𝑚 = 1, 𝜃𝑣 = 0, 𝜃𝑖 = 90°
(b) 𝑉𝑚 = 2, 𝐼𝑚 = 1, 𝜃𝑣 = 0, 𝜃𝑖 = 30°
(c) 𝑉𝑚 = 2, 𝐼𝑚 = 3, 𝜃𝑣 = 30, 𝜃𝑖 = 60°
(d) Please show an example of negative average by selecting 𝜃𝑣 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝜃𝑖 . Would it
be possible for a passive (R, L, C) networks?
