Homework 3 (Due 10/28)

1. The load impedance in the circuit is shown below with line / load impedance.
(a) Please find the average power and magnetizing reactive power absorbed by
the line impedance (5+4j).
(b) Please find the average power and magnetizing reactive power absorbed by
the load impedance (45+46j).
(c) Please find the average power and reactive power delivered by the source.
Show that the power is balanced.

2. For question 1,
(a) Please find the power efficiency (power delivered to the load / total
dissipated power).
(b) Please also give the power efficiency if a capacitor -90j is connected with load
in parallel. Does the efficiency increase or decrease?
3. For the question in the class, if the load impedance is shunted by a capacitor -52j
(in parallel), please evaluate the follows:
(a) Please find the rms phasors VL and IL.
(b) Please find the average power and magnetizing reactive power absorbed by
the load impedance (39+26j).
(c) Please find the average power and magnetizing reactive power absorbed by
the line impedance (1+4j).
(d) Please find the average power and magnetizing reactive power absorbed by
the capacitance.
4. If the source current in the circuit shown is 3cos5000t (A):

(a) What impedance should be connected across terminal a and b to have

maximum average power transfer?
(b) What is the maximum average power transfer? Please be careful about Vm or
Vrms.
(c) If only pure resistance (resistor) is available, what size resistor connected
across a and b will result in the maximum average power transfer?
(d) What is the maximum average power for resistor?

connecting in series. A load is connected in parallel with the capacitor. Find
the load impedance Z that draws maximum power and calculate the Pmax.

6. The following circuit has the values L = 5mH, R1 = 5Ω, R2 = 10Ω, C = 50 μF, and I
= 5cos2000t A.
(a) Please find the input impedance.
(b) Find the rms value of v.
(c) Calculate the average power dissipated.
(d) Calculate the power dissipated by each resistor to confirm P = P1+P2.
