ASSIGNMENT / PROJECT BRIEF

Date: 30th March 2020

Details of Students in-charge: Sai Vandana (1811) and Maitreyi Devi (1852)
Details of other Students involved in the team:
Sukanya Nayak (1837) and Swati Trivedi (1922)
Title of the project: Summarize various printing methods since Guttenberg printing press to
today’s modern press

Introduction:
Our topic was to explain the timeline of the evolution of the various printing processes, and the
innovations that every era brought upon.

Since we wanted to make our product- final output- fun and unique, we thought of creating a
board game that would help kids learn the different eras of printing in a more enjoyable manner.
Our multi-player board game- Quiz of Eras- is already an existing product, and we have created a
trial-version of this product. This version is about the different printing eras that have existed till
now. Quiz of Eras comes with a playing board, playing cards, and an introductory booklet that
gives brief information about all the different eras.

Content/Body Text:
The whole board game and booklet involved using different elements for the design, aesthetic
and layout. The designing involves using of:

1. Texture: In order to give the board game and booklet the feel of older times, when printing
tech had come into picture and the kind of paper that was used back then, old yellow and
parched, we used parchment textures for our board, cards and booklet as a background. The
parchment paper gave the game the perfect look and feel of those times

2. Font: To align with the parchment paper and the old, grunge aesthetic of the board, the font
idea for the same was Old English and a serif font which was Times New Roman. A combination
of these fonts was used in order to make the game and booklet from olden times and give that
kind of an aesthetic

3. Illustrations: The cards and the board are illustrative in nature and have pictures of different
printing presses and borders to illustrate a vintage look.

The packaging involves creating a box for the board game in order to fit all the game elements
and compile in into one place. The box's design elements include the title and the name of the
game and other details

Our deliverables included:

1. Creating a booklet, that the players could refer to before the game starts to get an overview of
all the different eras

2. Creating playing cards, that had all the questions players would be required to answer in
order to win
3. Board Game, on which the players could play
4. Packaging, which included a box that could contain all the above mentioned elements

Since it is an actual entity, branding had to be done for all the above-mentioned elements, so
that ever element could resonate with the actual game/brand- Quiz of Eras.
So, in addition to ideating and creating these elements, we also branded all our elements.

Discussion:
The topic given to us was the History of printing from the Gutenberg printing press to offset
printing. The entire idea started out with creating a timeline using fan-folding to make it look like a
Harmonium. It was found out on further discussion that this idea turned was unfeasible for the
amount of content that had to be added to cover the topic. Since the content was very long and
heavy, it would be inconvenient to add a large number of folds to the harmonium. The thought
process shifted a few times after that.
The next idea was to make a booklet on the topic which further developed into attempting to
make a fold-out pamphlet.
The final idea was discussed and decided, when the topic of board games came up. A group
meeting was held where all four members of the group contributed to decide the details of the
game. The design elements to be executed were decided to be the board of the game, playing
cards, a booklet with information and the packaging for the board game. Multiple drafts were
made of each of these design elements with feedback from all members of the group and from
Prof. Keyur Saharabudhe. All changes were made and approved by the group members before
the final submission.

Conclusion:
We arrived at the idea of creating a board game after thinking of making a fan-folding object, a
pamphlet, a notepad, a poster, and a book. We decided upon a board game because it was truly
unique and combine education with entertainment.
All the team-members pooled in to conceptualize the rules, dimensions and vibe of the board
game. However, the design of all of these elements were done by Sai Vandana (1811) and
Maitreyi Devi (1852), of our group. Every element went through scores of changes with every
group discussion but in the end we managed to create something we were all proud of!
