Environmental Communication: Week 1/2 Overview

This is what we’ll cover (and what you need to do) in Weeks 1 and 2 of the
course:

1. Course introduction (Tuesday 21st Sept. 10.00-11.30 (in-person, room

232); or 11.45-1.15 (online live – see Moodle for the Zoom link).

The aim here is to introduce you to the course (aims, content, assessments
etc.), and for all of us to introduce ourselves to each other.

Ahead of this, please consider your response to these 2 questions:

a) Which of the pictures below (A – G) best describes your relationship

with the natural environment? [Also, of you have any concerns about the
validity of this question, I would be happy to discuss these.]

b) What, if anything, can those aiming to communicate and change

behaviours with respect to climate change learn from the covid pandemic (e.g.
individual, organisational, national responses to it)?

2. Between Tuesday 21st and Tuesday 28th:

a) Listen to Lecture 1 introducing the subject matter of environmental

communication

b) Listen to Lecture 2 on framing

c) Listen to Lecture 3 on dual process theory

As with all lectures, take notes as you listen.

3. Prepare for the seminar on Tues. 28th.

You’ll find instructions on a separate document.

4. Attend your seminar on Tues. 28th and be prepared to a) explain the

cognitive biases you have been allocated, and b) discuss your answers to the
questions set on An Inconvenient Truth.
