used to divert or convey information. Such behavior includes facial expressions,
body posture, body movements, eye movements, touch and use of space.8
This research will discuss body language in a film, where the characters in
the film communicate with each other using language, some films use the main
part of the story in non-verbal language. Non-verbal is a communication process
in which the message is conveyed using no words. Allen Pease believes "that
face-to-face communication of up to 93 percent of verbal messages is
communicated nonverbally and that nonverbal elements are far better indicators
of their true meaning than actual words”.9It means that non-verbal signs are very
important to understand in face-to-face interactions. But this is not easy to talk
about, because nonverbal signals are different in almost every culture, each
character uses body language for communication, because the character is a
mental or moral quality that makes a person, group and nation, it means that the
fictional character is part of the artistic whole and must always serve the overall
needs of it.
The researcher is interested in analyzing this movie because there are
many moral messages namely how we are proud of our true selves, never give up
on something, difference is power, and every event has wisdom. For example,
when Mike had to accept the fact that he was expelled from the class he wanted
from the past and also the dream of every monster that is majoring in scaring. But
because of the incident that he did with Sully made the dean of Hardscarbble
angry and bearing bad fruit on him. But apparently it was the beginning of Mike's
journey with Sully, there was a special competition that could get them back into
the class. This is their chance but to enter this competition they first have a group.
Instead of wanting to get the best group or contain great monsters, finally they
have to join a group that contains terrible monsters and is often underestimated.
They are trying to balance each other, trust each other, and still practice

because the variations in their community have their own intelligence, dumb,
sluggish, clever, brilliant, lacking or much knowledge, or strong is not an
impediment to doing something great, to do something amazing, we don't have to
feel great; we only have to do our best to accomplish our goals and make the
people around us happy. The Monsters University film received $269.5 million in
the United States and Canada, and $475.7 million in other countries, for a
worldwide total of $744.2 million. Taking into account all costs, The deadline has
passed. Hollywood estimated that the film made $179.8 million in profit. It is the
56th-best-selling film of all time, the 12th-best-selling animated film of all time,
the seventh-best-selling 2013 film, and the third-best-selling Pixar film.
Although the "Monster University" movie is fiction, this movie also very
interesting because it can build an atmosphere of tension and excitement of people
who watch it. Based on the explanation above, the writer found that there are
various body language used by Mike Wazowski and then the meaning of body
language that is shown by the character is happy, sad and disappointed, based on
that, after watching and understanding the movie "Monster University" by Dan
Scanlon, the author has chosen the title of this research is "The Analysis of Body
Language of The Main Character in The Monster University movie by Dan

CHAPTER II
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
2.1. Proxemics
Proxemics is a study that studies body position and body distance (space
between bodies when people communicate interpersonal). 10 It was Edward T.Hall
as the father of proxemics studies who introduced this theory. Proxemics,
according to Hall, is another form to explain the relationship between his
observations and theories about how a person uses special space in culture and
habits to communicate interpersonal. Another special definition of proxemics is
the study of how a person is unconsciously involved in the structure of space or
physical distance between humans as an order as an orderly social order every
day. This concept is actually an analogy from the study of urban architects about
how to secure a city as a settlement.
Posture and body distance, according to Hall, are unintentional reactions
when there are fluctuations in the workings of the five senses, such as invisible
changes in a person's voice and tone of speech. Social distance between humans
can be trusted in relation to physical distance, which consists of intimate distance
and personal distance, then divided again as follow:
This distance is used with intimate people. At this distance, the presence of
other people physically feels tight. In this distance, the sound of sight is
distorted and the sounds that are heard consist of whispers, groans, or snoring.
In this distance also these two people can feel the heat and body odor can also
find their partner. It is undeniable that there are times when we get involved
with someone, our feelings change with the mood. But jostling in the elevator
is not included in this category because the requirements in this category must
be in accordance with the intentional or there is an attraction between the two
people.
10
Edward T. Hall. The HiddenDimension, (Garden city NY Double Day:1966)
5
B. Personal distance18 inches -4 feet (± 0.5m-1.5m)
18 inches is the outer distance from intimate distance and the beginning of
personal distance. At this distance we lose the heat and odor of the couple's
body except when using a strong fragrance. Eye gaze starts to look focused and
the sounds that are issued begin to have a verbal meaning. Even though the
conditions included in this type are unique, a person can still hold, or
encourage his partner. This distance is the distance of interaction from good
friends, is also the most appropriate distance for people who discuss personal
issues.
6
distance also depends on culture, social situation, gender and people's
preferences.
The term which is almost the same as proxemic is propinkuity
(familiarity). Propinkuity is one factor, introduced by Jeremy Bentham, often
used to calculate the amount of pleasure with a method called pleasure count.
People often refer to their need for "personal space", which is also an
important type of nonverbal communication. The amount of distance we need
and the amount of space we perceive as belonging to us, is influenced by a
number of factors including social norms, situational factors, personality
characteristics and level of familiarity. For example, the amount of personal
space needed when having a casual conversation with another person usually
varies between 18 inches to four feet. On the other hand, the personal distance
needed when speaking to a crowd of people is around 10 to 12 feet.11
The majority of people believe that language and culture are inextricably
linked. Language communicates through culture, and culture communicates
through language. Some may also argue that “language is culture” or “culture
is language.”.
A culture is defined in the following way:
“The ideas, customs, and social behaviour of a particular people or
society”or“a particular set of customs, morals, codes and traditions from a
specific time and place”
The formal, traditional use of sounds, signs, or written symbols in a human
society for communication and self expression is described as language. One
of the connections between language and culture is that thoughts, practices,
and rituals are usually passed down through conversation.

2.2. Language
Saussure considers language to be a system of signals. A symbol, according
to him, consists of a signifier (the sound-image or the written shape) and a
signified (a concept), which are inextricably related. In other terms, the sound-
image cannot be distinguished from the meaning, implying that the two are
inseparable. He further likens language and thought to a sheet of paper; He
believes that thought is the front part of paper and sound the back part. It is
impossible to cut any of the two parts without cutting the other. In the sense
that, in language the sounds and thought are inseparable. 12
On the other hand, the indivisibility and undivideability of the signifier and
the signified, for example, for an English speaker, the sound-image dog
belongs with the concept and perception dog and not with the concept cow,
creates a misapprehension and false sense of the lucidity and clarity of
expression. In other words, as Hjelmslevmaintains, “It is the nature of
language to be overlooked”13
Generally speaking, language is introduced by Crystal as “the systematic,
conventional use of sounds, signs or written symbols in a human society for
communication and self expression”. Similarly, Emmitt and Pollock consider
language to be a system of arbitrary signs that are recognized by a community
and society of users. It is taken delivery of a particular intent in relation to the
client's communal world. The aim of language, according to Chase, is to
communicate with others, to think, and to shape one's perspective and outlook
on life. Language does, in fact, form human thoughts. Language, according to
Saussure, is a system of distinctions. In this context, he argues that the
interpretation of a sound-image or written shape varies across languages. “If
words stood for pre-existing concepts, they would all have exact equivalents

in meaning from one language to the next; but this is not true”14 That is to say,
the concept of a sound-image or symbol in different languages is different.
2.3. Culture
Rocherananthropologist, believes that “Culture is a connection of ideas and
feelings accepted by the majority of people in a society”15. Undeniably,
culture is learned and shared within social groups and is conveyed by
nongenetic ways. Taylor, an anthropologist, in his book Primitive Culture,
states that culture, in a broad sense, involves values, arts, abilities, moralities,
rules, customs, and behaviors that a person acquires as a member of a
community. Kluckhohn and Kroeber consider civilization and culture the
same and they believe the two terms have been used synonymously. They
both reflect different levels of the same subject to them. Civilization denotes
the rapid creation of a modern society; culture denotes the same thing. -
society has its own distinct culture, which can be simple or complex. If culture
is taken seriously, it seems that people need not only enough food but also
food that is well-cooked.
According to Goodenough, culture is a systematic group of people who
share a common way of life. As a result, the only difference between humans
and animals is that of tradition. Of course, animals live in groups, but it's a
special kind of group. There are, indeed, a lot of sharing characteristics
between human beings and animals such as associative life, responsibility
toward children and so on. But culture is for men, only. T. S. Eliot, considers
culture as a capital and means for developing all cultures and knowledge in
order to terminate all human sharing problems, for helping economical
stabilization and political security. Spencer, calls culture the milieu of super
organic and highlights the separation of culture from physical and natural

factors. He believes that the super organic factor is only for man, whereas; the
other two factors are the same for man and animal. 16
2.4. Body Language
Body language is a type of a nonverbal communication in which physical
behaviors, as opposed to words, are used to express or convey the information.
Such behavior includes facial expressions, body posture, gestures, eye movement,
touch and the use of space. Body language exists in both animals and humans, but
this article focuses on interpretations of human body language. It is also known as
kinesics.17
Body language is as nonverbal behavior (movement and postures, facial
expression, glances and eye contact, automatic reactions, spatioal and touching
behavior) which is meaningful in both antural and fictional communication. 18
Body language should not be confused with sign language, since sign
languages, like spoken languages, are complete languages with their own complex
grammar structures, as well as the ability to exhibit the essential properties of all
languages. Body language, on the other hand, lacks a grammatical system and
must be interpreted broadly, rather than providing an exact meaning
corresponding with a specific movement, because it is not a language like sign
language and is simply referred to as a "language" due to popular culture.
There are agreed-upon explanations of specific actions in a culture.
Interpretations can differ from one country to the next or from one culture to the
next. On that note, there is some debate over whether body language is universal.
In social contact, body language, a branch of nonverbal communication,
supplements verbal communication. According to some scholars, nonverbal
contact accounts for the bulk of knowledge exchanged during interpersonal
interactions. It aids in the establishment of a relationship and controls contact, but
it can be ambiguous.

Nonverbal bodily behavior serves five main roles in human
communication: 1) to convey feelings, 2) to express interpersonal behaviors, 3) to
assist speech in handling contact signals between speakers and listeners, 4) to self-
present one's personality, 5) rituals (greetings).

the party. They will hug them although they do not know them well. The
meaning is American is a people with open mind. They are positive mind with
the people that they meet first time.
3. Eye Movements
Rolling eyes can be the body's use of eye contact. Rolling one's eyes can
be very helpful and easy, especially in the case of a child or an adult. If a
person can't look you in the eyes straight in the eyes, it may be a sign that
they're not telling the truth, or that they're being disrespectful. For example, if a
person is speaking to an audience and is not interested, it may be due to another
reason, such as being bored.
Another type may be a speaker who takes no form. Eye contact is
something that most Americans do. It’s is important for themexpressing that
are expressed. For example when a man meets a woman in the party, a man
feels interesting with the woman. A man will see straight of the women. A man
is not shy in crowded place for expressing that. The meaning from the body
language likes with the woman.22
4. Posture Movements
Posture namely, body pose is meaningful in terms of giving important
clues of an individual’s personality, his or her inner world, and themessage that
the person wants to communicate. Withing this context, theatre actors and
mimes are among the most readable. 23 Postural hypotension, for example, is a
decrease in blood pressure (hypotension) caused by a shift in body position (a
change in posture) when an individual moves to a more vertical position:
sitting to standing, or lying down to sitting or standing.
The position in which we hold our bodies while standing, sitting, or lying
down is referred to as posture. Good posture is described as the proper
alignment of body parts assisted by the appropriate amount of muscle tension
against gravity. Without posture and the muscles that keep it in place.

Having a good posture is good for you socially and physically. A tip for
having a good posture is to pretend your are against the wall with all your body
parts touching the well as much as possible. It is important for people to have
their “own space”. When you talk to someone, you get closer to him or her
than you would a stranger. So there is an invisible line that sure rounds a
person. If a stranger crosses the line, you would feel uncomfortable: they get
too close for comfort.
From the explanation above, it can be known that there are four kinds of
body language based on the Alan and Barbara’s book. The writer used this
theory to find out kinds of movement are expressed by the main
characterinMonster University movie by Dan Scanlon.
3. Message Regulation
Finally, nonverbal signals aid in the regulation of the back and
forth movement of person-to-person contact. Nonverbal cues assist us in

managing and controlling communication; but, in order to use nonverbal
cues effectively, we must first understand them..
Based on the explanation above there are three messages of body
language in nonverbal communication. The writer used this theory to find
the massages of body language expressed by the main character in Monster
University movie by Dan Scanlon.

Secondly, it is from Surabaya University, Language and Art Faculty,
English Litrerature in 2014. She is Andre Rahman, entitled “An Analysis of the
Language Styles in the “King’s speech movie”26. The author's review According
to Martin Joos' (1967) theory, there are five language styles: frozen style, formal
style, consultative style, informal style, and intimate style. This language style can
be distinguished by the situation in which the speaker is speaking, whether formal
or informal, public or private, When we talk, who will listen? Will it be our
friends, our parents, or anyone we've never met before? The styles that appear in
any interaction or conversation that Bertie (King George VI) has as a leading
character in this film will be the subject of this study. and then categorizing it into
five language types to determine the styles predominated. In this review, the
writer employs Qualitative Description as a tool. After conducting analysis, the
writer discovered that all styles are present in Bertie's conversation, and the type
of style that appears most frequently in the film is Consultative style (34%),
followed by Casual style (31%), Formal and Intimate style (16%), and Frozen
style (14%). (3 percent ).
Thirdly, The objective of the this research are to describe “Body language
used by the lecturers of English Education Department of Muria Kudus
University in teaching learning process and the students perceptions of body
language used by the lecturer”27. This thesis falls under the category of qualitative
analysis in the form of a case study. The data for this study was body language
and students' impressions of body language used by lecturers of Muria Kudus
University's English Education Department in the teaching learning phase, which
were collected from two lecturers and 28 third semester students of Muria Kudus
University's English Education Department.
According to the findings of this study, lecturers' body language, such as
seriousness and laughing, is linked to their facial expression. Gesture is associated

with thumbs up and pointing fingers. Eye contact is linked to looking at the class,
looking at the students, and looking at the board/papers. Body distance is related
to walking in front of the class, walking through the class, body movements, and
sitting. According to the results of the students' interpretations of the lecturers'
body language, 81 percent approve and 19 percent disagree for lecturer 1 and 79
percent agree and 21 percent disagree for lecturer 2, It means that lecturers' use of
body language in the teaching-learning process is efficient, and students are more
engaged when lecturers use body language in their teaching. The author
recommends that this study be used as a guide to learn about the body language of
students, not just lecturers.
From the three previous findings above, this research has similiraties and
differences from those researchers. The writer can be concluded the similarity is
that the previous researches were all about body language. Differences are first
research used movie titled Black swan as subjects, second research used movie
titled King’s Speech as subjects, and third research used the lecturers of English
Education Department of Muria Kudus University as subjects. The result of first
research for the kinds of body language the dominant was Eye movements and for
the message of body language the dominant was Message Negation. The result of
second research The writer discovered that all styles occur in Bertie's
conversation, and the type of style that occurs most frequently in the film is
Consultative style (34%), followed by Casual style (31%), Formal and Intimate
style (16%), and Frozen style (14%). (3 percent ). And, according to the findings
of the third study, lecturers' body language, such as seriousness and laughing, is
linked to their facial expression. Gesture is associated with thumbs up and
pointing fingers. Eye contact is linked to looking at the class, looking at the
students, and looking at the board/papers. Body distance is related to walking in
front of the class, walking through the class, body movements, and sitting.

CHAPTER III
METHOD OF RESEARCH
3.1. Design of Research
In this research, the writer used qualitative research that suitable with the
aim of research. Qualitative research is descriptive which the data collected from
of the word picture rather than number and it is tent analyze this data inductively
and the meaning is essential to the qualitative approach.28
kunci”29. Qualitative study involves research procedures that generate descriptive
data in the form of spoken words from the person or action being studied.
that qualitative research is multimethod in nature, has a naturalistic approach to its
subject matter, and studies things in their natural settings, trying to make sense of
or explain phenomena in terms of the meanings people assign to them..
In qualitative research, the writer choose descriptive method. Method
descriptive is data that collected is in the form of words, images and it was not
numbers. This is caused by the application of qualitative method. According to
Ratna “Metode deskriptif dilakukan dengan mendeskripsikan fakta-fakta yang
kemudian disusul dengan analisis”. 31 It means, this method can be described the
research. The writer analyzed the body language of Monster University movie.
Then used the qualitative research, the data is analyzed by interpreting and this

data will analyzed by using descriptive analysis, by using qualitative method and
descriptive research.
Based on those statements, it is possible to infer that qualitative research
examines descriptive data obtained in the context of a natural object's
circumstance. Where descriptive data, such as written or spoken data, is present,
qualitative analysis can provide the writer with a satisfactory response to the
question of analyzing the body language of the main character in the Monster
University film.

The writer had some steps in collecting the data, in order to make this
research more specific, the steps in collecting data :
1. Repeatedly watching and reading the data; after gathering all relevant
sources, the writer reads it to ensure that the data is consistent with the
analysis.
2. Gathering all data and capturing all images taken from movies, scripts,
and other sources that are closely linked to the study goal.
3. Making a mark on the words or sentences, as well as all relevant
statements and facts, and then making a note of details. After carefully
reading the sources, the writer highlighted some relevant statements to
aid the writer in the evaluating process for the analysis.
4. Identifying and categorizing the data: After locating all of the data, the
writer analyzed it in order to interpret it. Finally, as the final step in
the research process, the writer made a good arrangement for the
thesis itself.

4.2.2 Message of body language
In this study, the author examined the message of body language,
namely, message complementation, message negation, and message
regulation, proposed by Knapp and Hall52. In this research, the writer
did not find message regulation.
A. Message Complementation
Datum 1.
In this situation, Mike was in the classroom, at that time
Mike was reading his textbook, there Sullivan really paid
attention to what Mike was doing.shortly afterward, Sullivan
approached Mike Wazawaski and knocked his book down. Then
Sullivan makes a scare move in front of Mike while saying that
Mike Wazawski doesn't deserve to be in the scare
department. Then Mike immediately bluffed Sullivan in a
terrifying gesture.
Pictures 3753
Based on the image above, it can be concluded that the
image is a message complementation, because here they bully
each other, which means they are both upset and angry.

Mike Wazawski instructs them to keep walking slowly because
here they are not allowed to be noisy in the library. if they made
a fuss then they would be thrown out of the library by the
librarian and disqualified.
Picture 3854
Based on the image above, it can be concluded that the
image is message complementation, because Mike Wazawski
gestures to keep walking slowly, and his friends understand the
sentences and movements made by Mike Wazawski.
Datum 3.
In this situation, Sullivan accidentally entered Mike
Wazawski's room because Sullivan was chasing a pig, then
Mike Wazawski was spontaneously surprised to see Sullivan

Mike Wazawski's room, then Sullivan and Mike Wazawski got
acquainted.

37
Picture 3955
Based on the image above, it can be concluded that the
image is a message complementation, because Sullivan reaches
out to Mike Wazawski, which Mike Wazawskiunderstands,
which means that he invites Mike to get acquainted.
B. Message Negation
Datum 1.
In this situation Dean Hardscrable tests Mike Wazawski
how to scare a 5 year old little girl, then Mike answers his
theory correctly, but when practicing Mike is wrong, therefore,
Dean Hardcrable doesn't allow Mike Wazawski to be in the
scare department.

Durations: 00.17.58
56
Durations: 00.29.01
38
Based on the image above, it can be concluded that the
image is a message negation, because Mike Wazawski's theory
speech when answering Dean Hardscrable's question does not
match what Mike Wazawski practices.
Datum 2.
In this situation, the Oozma Kappa team for the first time
took part in the first round in a scare race, here Mike advised his
entire team that Mike Wazawski could win the match in that
round, without Mike realizing that the match had to prioritize
team cohesiveness, when Mike Wazawski reachedat the finish
line, he did not realize that his entire team was lagging behind
him, so that it made his team disqualified.
Pictures 4157
Based on the picture above, it can be concluded that the
picture is a message negation, because Mike said to his entire
team that he was able to win in that round, but Mike forgot that
to win the race must bring the entire team to the finish line.

they are not heard by the librarian.
C. Personal distance
Datum 1.
In this condition, Mike was studying in his room, shortly
thereafter he heard the sound of his room window opening and a
pig with Sullivan from his class appeared, the incident made
Mike surprised and made a little noise in Mike's room, then

expressed his disappointment with Sullivan
