Assignment no. 1

Question no.1

Given data :

Mass of car = 2.0 × 103 kg

Velocity of car = 45 m/s

Friction force = 7.5 × 103 N

Part no.1

Determine the least distance

First of all we need acceleration

Using the equation : F fr = μk N=μk .mg

Now we know that:

Friction force = Normal force in opposite direction

Ffr = -Fn

m.ma = -μkmg

a = -μk. g

As we know that:

g = 9.8 and μ = 7.5×103

a = - (7.5×103)(9.8)

a = - 73.5×103

Newton’s 3rd law says that

v2 = u2+2 as

By putting the values of v , u and a in law

(0)2 = (45)2 + 2(-73.5×103 )s

0 = 2025 + (-147×103)s

0 = 2025 – 147×103 s

147×103 s = 2025
S = 2025/147×103

S = 0.0137 m

So least distance is 0.0137 m

Part no.2

Collision occur at distance 40.0 m

Here

Distance = 40m

a = -73.5

v2 = u2 + 2as

As we know that

Final velocity v = 0

So putting the values in equation

02 = u2 + 2(-73.5)(40)

0 = u2 + (-5880)

0 = u2 – 5880

u2 = 5880

Taking square root

u = 76.68

So, the required speed for collision is 76.68 m/s

Part no. 3

From above numerical we observe that physics is very helpful in our daily life.

ie.

We should retain the speed limit below 76.68 m/s to avoid the collision.

Question no.2

Given:

Initial velocity vi = v mph

Means 1mile per hour

Converting mph into meter/second

Mile = 1609 meters

Hour = 3600 seconds

M/h = 1609/3600

= 0.44704 m/s

Distance = s = d = feet

Means 1 feet

Convert feet into meters

1 ft = 0.3048

Equation:

Vf 2 = Vi 2 + 2as

Putting the values in equation

(0)2 = (0.44704)2+ 2(a)(0.3048)

0 = 0.1998 + 2(0.3048)a

-0.1998 = 2(0.3048)a

a = -0.1998/2(0.3048)

a = -0.3278

Now putting 2v in equation to find the skid distance

Vf 2 – Vi 2 = 2as

0 – (2)2 = 2(-0.3278)s

0-4 = 2(-0.3278)s

-4 = 2(-0.3278)s

-4/2(-0.3278) = s

-2 /-0.3278 = s

S = 6.101 meter

So the skid distance is 6.101 meter
