Metacognitive Reading Report #1

Title of the Article: What are history and “historical sources”

Name: Marielle Joy T. Bustamante Date: 25/11/2021

1. Three (3) Things that I significantly learned from the readings

a. According to the reading, there is a significant difficulty in the historical

information we have now, as the historical knowledge that the world currently has
is relatively restricted. Authenticity and uniqueness are challenges that must be
addressed. The assertion can be further clarified and supported by the fact that,
according to the readings, information and knowledge will have to go through
different and diverse media before reaching the world.
b. The term "history" comes from a Greek word that means learning. As we can see,
the word's etymology makes sense because we all learn from our experiences, and
we must do so to avoid repeating negative events; otherwise, everything will be a
repeat of itself.
c. Also, one of the most important things I learned from the reading was that there
are a variety of sources, each of which produces distinct types of information.
Sources can further separate primary and secondary sources into antique and
testimonials, written or orally conveyed. According to the book, the sources serve
as the foundation for supporting one's thesis or claim and explaining that
something existed or happened. Primary sources are more factual, while
secondary sources are more opinionated, according to the book.

2. Three (3) Things that are still unclear to me

a. The information about the basis of the historians in clarifying the sources is a bit
inadequate, and I think there is a lot to learn about it.
b. Although I comprehend some of the themes discussed in the readings, I am still
unsure about a few aspects. One of them is why do we need to know so much
about history? Isn't it enough to know who our national hero is?
c. The readings about the concept of the personal equation I find quite hard to
understand..

3. I used to think that….

The reliable sources we get from historical documents are accurate, and there is
some proof about the past. Still, this reading provided me with a lot of new
questions and information. Authenticity and originality are two major concepts
that have captivated my interest. We cannot judge some topics just based on one
person's remark or one point of view. People should view it from many angles.

4. Three (3) questions that I want to ask about the readings

a. On the other hand, there are plenty of lies on the internet. How can the truth be
made available to the general public, and how can it be distinguished from the
many lies that surround it?
b. According to the book, sources are always reliable to people for authenticity and
dependability. But why in some cases, it can be a contradictory remark that
sometimes can be misleading.
c. Social media and mass media are two inseparable concepts. Nevertheless, social
media is a newer trend and a newer method of mass communication. How can a
person filter out information if everything appears true in today's world with its
immersion on the internet?
