1 Assignment: Reflection - Identity

For this assignment, we’ll make connections to what we learned about identity and culture. We’ll also connect
this to our own experience in school.

Follow the steps below to complete this assignment.

1. Write your reflection addressing the three items listed below. Write one paragraph for each item. You
will write three paragraphs in total.

○ Your surface and below the surface identifies: First, spend some time reflecting (and writing)
about the parts of your identity you’re comfortable sharing. Think specifically about which of
those aspects of identity are on and below the surface of other people’s perceptions.
i. Type reflection: I am a 5’6 Mexican-American who may not seem like it, but really does
care about my friends. I always say I do not try, but it's not true to a certain extent. I am
the type of person who bottles all his emotions and refuses to talk to anyone about
them.

○ Your school experience and invisible identity: Then reflect on a moment in your school
experience in which one of your below-the-surface identities was impacted and/or disclosed.
i. Type reflection: my emotions come out a lot during the sports seasons. During one of
my track meets I was tired of being the second best at the mile. when I finally went sub
5 minutes and beat christian I was overcome with emotions, my coach told me he has
never seen as such an “emotional mess”

○ The effect of your identity: Finally, how has your identity affected the way that you think about
and approach school? Is school designed to be easier or harder for specific parts of your
identity? How has school affected how your identities are perceived?
i. Type reflection: It has made me see that every individual has their own unique identity
that they are not showing. School has made it more difficult to express certain emotions
