This document provides instructions for a structural design project to be completed in groups of up to five students over eight weeks. It will contribute 20% to the course grade. Students must obtain architectural drawings for a 2-story building, then propose and design the building's structural plans, beams, slabs, and load analysis. Each student must analyze and design one simply supported beam and one continuous beam. Students must prepare structural drawings using AutoCAD and a technical report in PDF format.

General • This project is to be carried out in a group of maximum Five (5) students. • This project will contribute 20% to the total mark of the course with the following distribution: ‐ CLO 1 (cognitive) = 5% ‐ CLO 2 (Psychomotor) = 7.5% ‐ CLO 3 (Affective) = 7.5% • Duration of this project is about 8 weeks. • An interview or presentation will be conducted on week 13/14 during the submission of the final project report.

Specific Tasks 1. Get an architecture drawing for a 2‐storey building. 2. The architecture drawings must consist of the building floor plans (ground, first floor & roof), elevation views and cross sections (if any). 3. The usage of the building can be residential, office, shop, institution and etc. 4. The ground floor slab of the building can be designed as suspended or non‐suspended slab.

5. Based on the architecture drawings, your group is required to: (i) Proposed/plan the structural layout plans (ground, first floor and roof). (ii) Proposed the suitable and practical beam size and thickness of suspended slabs. (iii) Identify the materials properties (eg. unit weight and strength). (iv) Identify the permanent and variable actions to be used for designing the building. (v) Analyse and distribute the load of first floor slab to the first floor beam.

(vi) Analyse and design the first floor beams. Each group member is required to analyse and design ONE simply supported beam and ONE continuous beam. (vii) Prepare the structural layout plan of each floor and structural detailing for the beams. The drawing MUST be prepared using AutoCAD. (viii) Prepare a technical report. The calculation of the design can be typed using format of Design Sheet. The report should be submitted via softcopy in pdf format.
