SECTION - C
This section consists of 6multiple choice questions with an overall choice to attempt any5. In case more than
desirable number of questions are attempted, ONLY first 5 will be considered for evaluation.
Read the passage given below and answer the following questions
In heterolytic cleavage, the bond breaks in such a fashion that the shared pair of electrons remains with one of the
fragments. When this happens in carbon compounds (especially in hydrocarbons) , it results into formation of two
charged particles . One atom has a sextet of electrons and therefore, has a positive charge while other will have a
valence octet with at least on lone pair and therefore has a negative charge. The species having a carbon atom
possessing sextet of electrons and a positive charge is called a carbocation (earlier called carbonium ion). On the
other hand the species that has carbon atom with the shared pair of electrons and carrying a negative charge is called
carbanion. Carbocations & carbanion are classified as primary, secondary or tertiary depending on whether one, two
or three carbons are directly attached to the positively or negatively charged carbon.
In homolytic cleavage, one of the electrons of the shared pair in a covalent bond goes with each of the bonded
atoms. In carbon compounds such bond fission results into formation of carbon free radicals which are also classified
as as primary, secondary or tertiary depending on whether one, two or three carbons are directly attached to the
carbon carrying an unpaired electon . All the species which are produced during bond fission are quite reactive and
called reaction intermediates.

(i) inductive effect (ii) Hyper conjugation
(iii) Both inductive effect & hyper conjugation (iv) Resonance
54- The most unstable free radical out of the following is

(iii) tertiary (iv) methyl free radical
