INSOLATION WORKSHEET

1. How do the two maps of insolation compare to each other?

The solar energy from the sun is more concentrated and has a heightened
temperature in the southern hemisphere on the map in January
but in july the opposite occurs.
2. The hemisphere getting the most energy is the one experiencing summer. Which
hemisphere is experiencing summer in January?
Southern
Which hemisphere is experiencing summer in July?
Northern
3. Why is the insolation for January and July nearly opposite of each other?
Only part of earth surface is being hit by the sun's solar energy, and because they are on the opposite sides
of the earth they are not being hit by the same direction or degree of energy from the sun.
4. Notice that the two hemispheres do not get equal amounts of energy. During which
month does the northern hemisphere get the most energy?
June
What season is it?
Summer
During which month does the southern hemisphere get the most energy?
December
What season is it?
Winter
Are they the same?
No
5. Why do you think that the different hemispheres get different amounts of energy during
the same time of year?
Because the sun is hitting different sides of earth's surface while the earth
orbits the sun.
6. Using the graphs below, why do the hemispheres experience differences in temperature
ranges for the same season?

The Northern Hemisphere has more land while the Southern Hemisphere's surface is
covered in more water, and because water has a higher specific heat the northern
hemisphere has a more intense temperature than the Southern Hemisphere.
