DETAILED LESSON PLAN

IN
GRADE 7 – EARTH AND SPACE

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the period, the students will be able to:
A. identify the factors that affect seasons;
B. interpret data about sunrise and sunset to tell when daytime is long and when daytime
is short; and
C. relate the importance of day and night to human life.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

A. Concept: Seasons in the Philippines
B. Sub-concept: Causes of Season in the Philippines
C. Materials: Television, Laptop, Power Point Presentation

II. LEARNING PROCEDURE

TEACHER’S ACTIVITY LEARNER’S ACTIVITY

A. ENGAGE
I will be flashing pictures and identify what
you have observed.

Daytime

Nighttime

We will use these two concepts in identifying

what causes the season.

B. EXPLORE
“HOW DOES THE LENGTH OF
DAYTIME AND NIGHT TIME AFFECT
THE SEASON?”
Bring out your Science Learner’s Material
and answer Activity 2 pages 349-350. Write
your answer in a whole sheet of paper.

C. EXPLAIN
What would happen if the sun didn’t exist at Without the Sun's warmth, Earth would
all? quickly become a much colder place.
Fortunately, Earth retains heat fairly well, so
humans wouldn't freeze instantly. Life would
get much more difficult.

What would happen if the earth stops If it stopped spinning completely not even
spinning? once every 365 days, you would get 1/2 year
daylight and 1/2 year nigh time. During
daytime for 6 months, the surface
temperature would depend on your latitude,
being far hotter that it is now at the equator
than at the poles where the light rays are
more slanted and heating efficiency is lower.

Kindly name the major factors that cause the  tilt of the earth
seasons.  its revolution around the sun
 length of day time
 direct rays of the sun

How many hours are there in a day? There are 24 hours in a day.

Do you think that daytime and nighttime are Students’ answers may vary.
always equal?

Based on your activity, you can infer that the

length of daytime changes from month to
month.

What will happen when the north pole is Daytime will be longer than nighttime in the
tilted toward the sun? Northern hemisphere.

What happens when daytime is longer than The time of heating up during the day will be
nighttime? longer than the time of cooling down at
night.

You have the point. Any other opinion? Longer hour of daylight mean that the sun is
in the sky for a longer time. Thus, there is a
longer time to heat up the surface of the
Earth. And a short night means the time to
cool down is less.

What do you think happens when the heat The Northern hemisphere steadily warms up
adds up day after day? and the result is summer.

How about the happenings to the opposite At the same time, in the Southern
hemisphere? hemisphere, nights are longer than daytime
that result colder here.

How tilt of the earth causes seasons? As the Earth travels around the sun, the
hemisphere that is tilted towards or away
from the sun changes. It causes the change of
the season just like when the earth is tilted
toward the sun it will be summer there while
the opposite hemisphere is winter.

How does the earth’s revolution affect its The Earth’s revolution not only affects but
season? actually causes the temperature conditions
that give the Philippines seasons. Which
season it is depends on whether you live in
the Northern or Southern Hemisphere
because the Earth’s axis tilts toward one of
the two as it moves around the sun. The
seasons are always opposite in each
hemisphere. This rotational process causes
the sun to be higher in the sky in the colder
and lower in the summer.

How about the orbit of the earth? The Earth orbits the sun once a year, causing
its two hemispheres to shift positions, either
pointing toward the sun or away from it. The
hemisphere pointing toward the sun is in
summer and the hemisphere pointing away
from it is in colder.

How the earth’s axis affect the seasons? The Earth’s axis, the imaginary line around
which the planet spins, is tilted. This causes
the planet to lean away from the sun,
receiving only indirect solar energy in the
colder, and direct solar energy in the
summer. Temperatures increase in the
summer because the sun’s energy is more
concentrated.

D. ELABORATE
D1. Generalization
What happens when daytime is longer than The time of heating up during the day will be
nighttime? longer than the time of cooling down at
night.

How about when the Earth has moved farther The North Pole will then be tilted away from
along its orbit? the sun. Nighttime will be longer than
daytime in the Northern Hemisphere. There
would be shorter time for heating up and
longer time to cool down. The result is
winter in the Northern Hemisphere. In
tropical Philippines. It is the cold season.
Meanwhile, it will be summer in the
Southern Hemisphere.

D2. Application
How does day and night affect the life on Without sunlight, plants stop making food
Earth? and releasing oxygen. Without oxygen there
would no life on earth.

E. EVALUATE
I. TRUE OR FALSE
Direction: Analyze the questions carefully. Write TRUE if the statement is correct and
FALSE if the statement is incorrect.

FALSE1. There are 3 major factors that cause the seasons.

FALSE2. There are 48 days in a day.
TRUE 3. When the Earth is tilted toward the sun it will be summer here.
TRUE 4. Without day, plants stop making food and releasing oxygen.
FALSE5. The seasons are always the same in each hemisphere.

II. FILL IN THE BOX

Direction: Study the data in the table below. Fill in the last column and explain why it is
likely to be hotter in April than in December.
