Contemporary art of the 21st century may combine elements of

performance, painting, sculpture, dance, and many other media. It draws on
the movements of modern art, including minimalism and assemblage art, to
create dynamic pieces that aim to challenge the viewer and spark thought.
Many contemporary artists use their work to comment on cultural and
political issues, including race, human rights, economic inequality, and
global conflict.
1. How would you describe contemporary?

Contemporary art is the art of today, produced by artists who are living in
our time. It provides opportunities to reflect on society and the issues that
are important to us and the world. It is part of a cultural dialogue that
concerns larger contextual frameworks such as identity, family, community,
and nationality. Filipino artists play a role in presenting and educating the
public about our history and identity. One of the aims of the contemporary
artists is to consolidate, promote, and harness the resources of Philippine
contemporary art using local mediums and mixed techniques.

2. What is the purpose of Filipino artist in contemporary arts?

It is a folk art because it originated among the townsfolk reflecting their

traditional culture. The art practice has also been passed from generation to
generation and its creative elements and aesthetic values mirror the people’s
everyday life. Another important aspect of this folk tradition is that the
makers of these intricate paper patterns do not see themselves as artists
and do not consider their works as arts.
