REPLACEING FREE BOOKS WITH E-READERS

Problem/Operation/Issue: In govt. schools of Pakistan, students

are provided with free books that costs govt a lot. Also, children have to
tow massive bags of books every day to school and from school.

Optimized solution: As a matter of fact, in today’s digital era, the

advancement of information and communication technology has already
shifted teaching-learning paradigm rapidly. Thus, making the syllabus
compact into an E-Reader (a robust tablet) might solve this issue.

Implementation:

• Govt. can collaborate with local mobile manufacturing industries to develop a robust
and economical device because an E-Reader will just have to display books along other
basic features. It may not even require a camera.
• Provide every student an E-Reader with a special educational sim card in it. For this
govt. can collaborate with telecom companies. Doing this, every student can have
access to books and other available literature. And cost for an E-Reader has been
estimated to be 3000 PKR while an average bag pack costs more than this now.
• Keep the syllabus UpToDate and same all over the country. Leaving the old syllabus
behind that had “floppy discs” and “what is a mouse?” type topics.
• Encourage the publishing companies to participate in this program

Economic Advantages:

• “One nation, one syllabus” can be implemented

• Syllabus can be updated easily
• Students don’t have to carry heavy bags
• We can reduce the paper utilization
• Burden of free books on Govt. of Pakistan will reduced
• Since, there is a relatively small portion for education system in the annual budged of
Pakistan. Digitalization or collaboration with other industries may help to cover more
thing altogether.

Feasibility: Most of the high school students already agree that the digital books applied on
their smart phone are necessity for today which they may access anywhere and anytime with
ease. Besides, the product also proves that digital material is more motivating, engaging, and
fun than the conventional one. Thus, E-Readers can have more good than harm.
