SPECCONv1_01

by Rohan Walker, April 2007

SPECCONv1_01 calculates the dissipation of excess pore water pressures in a

multilayer soil system subject to vertical and radial drainage. Soil properties are
constant. Loading is a single ramp load uniform with depth.

SPECCON was developed as part of the PhD thesis of Walker (2006) at the
University of Wollongong under the supervision of Prof. Buddhima Indraratna

This version of SPECCON was developed in response to reviewer comments for

the paper: Walker, R., Indraratna, B., and Sivakugan, N. "Vertical and radial
consolidation analysis of multi layered soil using the spectral method."
Submitted to Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering,
ASCE.

The Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) Excel version of SPECCON was made
possible through the free availability of eigenvalue/eigenvector extraction
subroutines by Volpi (2005)

The VBA code can be accessed through the VBA editor (Tools…Macro…Visual
Basic Editor)

MAKE SURE THAT MACROS HAVE BEEN ENABLED. (Tools… Macro…Security. You may
need to restart Excel.)
1 Copy Template sheet.
2 To prevent calculation during parameter input set the "Calculation?" cell (C132) to
FALSE.
3 Output times can be varied to suit though usually it is only necessary to alter the
final time increment and the intermediate times will be calculated based on linear or
logarithmic interpolation as chosen in cell C133.
4 Enter material/geometry properties in the appropriate yellow cells.
5
Choose a reference layer to which all properties will be normalised to. Note if
vertical drains are included then the reference layer must contain vertical drains.
6 Set the "Calculation?" cell (C132) to TRUE and wait.

Other:
Verification worksheets may be deleted to reduce file size.
Input units are usually m, kN, and years. The Excel goal seek tool can easily be
used to ensure an appropriate value in another unit system is achieved
Default output is average excess pore pressure vs time for each layer plus an
average over the whole soil profile. Pore pressure vs depth is also calculated at
the specified output times.

SPECCON Instructions Page 1 of 19

Note that the default pore pressure output at depth is calculated at four points
within a each layer. To achieve more output points within a layer in may be
necessary to subdivide the layer.
SPECCON is implemented as an ARRAY function. See excel help menu for
information on entering and editing array functions.
The greater the number of series terms used, the greater the accuracy of the
solution. But more series terms results in longer computation times.
Pore pressure vs depth does not look like a sine curve (Terzaghi 1D
consolidation)=more series terms
Problem dominated by radial drainage = more series terms
If pore pressure distribution in the short term is important=more series terms
If long term average pore pressure is more important=less series terms
Suitability of solution can be assessed by how much the pore pressure distribution
changes when including an extra series term.
A "time factor multiplier" has been included to quickly increase/decrease all c v and
ch values. This is useful in back analysing problems.
No error catching procedures have been written into the SPECCON code. If an
error occurs, try turning calculations on/off, and check input.
SPECCON was implemented as a function to allow use of Excel's Goal seek and
Solver tools.
The template was set up to print two A3 sheets.
If the calulations are taking too long, try pressing ESC or Break muliple times.
