Assignment 2

Q1. For a particular case of AM using sinusoidal modulating wave, the percentage
modulation is 20 percent. Calculate the average power in (a) the carrier and (b)
each side frequency, expressing your results as percentages of total transmitted
power.

Q2. The FM signal is described by

   
s FM (t)  100 cos  2(100 106 )t  5sin 104  t  3sin 2 104  t 
Determine
a. Maximum frequency deviation
b. Maximum phase deviation
c. Deviation ratio
d. Bandwidth of the modulated signal
e. Power of the modulated signal

Q3. Commercial FM radio broadcasting utilizes the frequency band 88 to 108 MHz
for the transmission of voice and music signals. The bandwidth of the information
signal is set at 15 kHz, and the peak frequency deviation is specified at 75 kHz.
Calculate the bandwidth of the FM signal.

Q4. Consider an FM signal generated by modulating a 10 MHz carrier with a 1 kHz

sinusoidal waveform such that peak frequency deviation is 2.5 kHz.
a. Determine the bandwidth of the modulated signal.
b. If the modulating signal amplitude is doubled, determine the bandwidth
of the modulated signal.
c. Determine the bandwidth of the modulated signal if the modulating
signal frequency is doubled.
d. Determine the bandwidth of the modulated signal if both the amplitude
and frequency of the modulating signal are doubled.

Q5. Wideband FM is to be generated from narrowband FM using the indirect

method of Figure-1. For the narrowband FM, fc1 = 125 kHz and Δf1 = 30 Hz.
For the desired wideband FM, fc = 80 MHz and Δf = 48 kHz.
(a) Suppose the largest multiplication factor allowed for an individual
multiplier is 5, and n1 = n2. Complete the design of the indirect WBFM
generator by specifying the constituent multiplying factors for n1 and n2,
and by specifying the two possible local oscillator frequencies.
(b) Repeat part (a) if only frequency doublers and triplers are allowed, n1 and n2
should be as close in value as possible but are not necessarily equal, and the
frequency deviation of the WBFM may be higher or lower than, but should be
as close as possible to, the desired value of 48 kHz.
