Chapter One
Q1.
Q2. The bore and stroke of a single cylinder SI engine that operates on a four
stroke cycle are 8 cm and 9 cm respectively. The speed of the engine is 2400 rpm.
The compression ratio is 9 and the length of the connecting rod is 16 cm. If the
combustion ends at 18o after TDC. Calculate:
i) average piston speed,
ii) clearance volume of the engine,
iii) volume in the combustion chamber at the end of combustion.
Q3. A four cylinder, 2.4 liter spark ignition engine operates on a four-stroke
cycle at 3200 rpm. The compression ratio is 9.5:1, the connecting rod length = 18
cm, and the bore and stroke are related as (S =1.06 B). If the combustion ends at
20o after TDC, calculate:
i) Clearance volume of the engine,
ii) Average piston speed,
iii) Volume in the combustion chamber at the end of combustion.
4- In a four stroke cycle petrol engine, the charge is compressed when both
the valves (i.e. inlet valve and exit valve) are closed,
a) agree
b) disagree
6- In diesel engines, the fuel is injected in the form of very fine spray, into
the engine cylinder, which gets ignited due to high temperature of the
compressed air.
a) agree
b) disagree
12- In four stroke engine there is one power stroke in _____ of crankshaft
rotation.
a) 180°
b) 360°
c) 540°
d) 720°
13- In four stroke engine which of the following is also known as power
stroke
a) Suction stroke
b) Compression stroke
c) Expansion stroke
d) Exhaust stroke
Q6. Write whether each of the following is true (T) or false (F):
