EXERCISE NO. 8
INFILTRATION

Problem:

1. The rainfall on five successive days on a catchment were 2, 6, 9, 5, and 3 cm. If the ϕ-index
for the storm can be assumed as 3 cm/day, find the total surface runoff.

R= P - ɸ index in cm/day

DAYS Rain fall (CM) Runoff (CM)

1 2 0
2 6 3
3 9 6
4 5 2
5 3 0

R= 11cm

2. Plot the infiltration curve of given watershed for 5 min, 10 min, 45 min, 1 hour, 3 hours, 5
hours and 8 hours. The initial infiltration rate is 0.46 in/hr, the infiltration rate at equilibrium
is 0.35 in/hr and k = 0.2 in/hr. Determine the volume of infiltration.

f (t) = fc + ( fo − fc )e^−kt
f(t)= 0.35in/hr. + (0.46in/hr – 0.35in/hr)e^(0.2in/hr)(t)

Time Infiltration rate

5mins. 0.458
10mins. 0.456
45mins. 0.445
1hr. 0.440
3hr. 0.410
5hr. 0.390
8hr. 0.372

Fp (t) = fc(t )+ fo − fc (1− e^−kt ) {(0.35)t + 0.46- 0.35 (1- e^-(0.2)t}

K 0.2

Time Infiltration rate

5mins. 0.038
10mins. 0.076
45mins. 0.339
1hr. 0.450
3hr. 1.298
5hr. 1.098
8hr. 3.239
A volume of infiltration of 3.239 inches was yielded from the watershed at t=8 hrs.
