Subject: Drilling Fluids Answer All Questions Exam: Midterm

Class: 4th year 2nd semester Group –B Date: 29.06.2021
Examiner: Najah Saeed Abd. No.17- To - No.32 Time: 120 Mints

Q1: A: Given the following Data:

Hole Data
⁄ Inch Casing (ID 8.681inch) set at 11,500 feet
7inch Liner (ID 6.276 inch) set at 13,000 feet
Liner Top set 750 feet inside 9 5/8 inch casing
6.5 inch Open hole drilled to 15,500 feet

Drill String data

4 ½ inch Drill Collars (ID 2 inch) Length 500 feet
3 ½ inch Drill pipe (ID 2.564 inch) Length 7000 feet
5 inch Drill pipe (ID 4.276 inch)
Find:
1. Draw the Profile of the Well?
2. Drill String Capacity (bbl)?
3. Total Volume (bbl)?
Q1: B: Why do you think we use ECD as a gauge of total pressures at depth in the system?
How is it helpful on the job?
Q2: A:(Answer One Only)
1. A well has been displaced from 5 000’ to surface with a kill mud weight of 15ppg. If
the rest of the well (total depth = 11 000’) is filled with a mud density of 12ppg,
calculate the bottom hole equivalent mud weight?
2. At 100 SPM the pumping pressure is 2850 psi with 13 ppg what is the new pressure
if the pumps are decreased to 65 SPM? What is the new pressure if the mud weight
is then decreased to 10.5 ppg?

Q2: B:
1. Explain in your words, The U-Tube Concept.
2. (Answer “Yes” or “No” to each question with a brief explanation of your answer.)
If the cutting load in the annulus was high and the well had been shut in on kick.

a. Would the drill pipe pressure be higher than in a clean well?

b. Would the casing pressure be higher than in a clean well?
c. Would the casing pressure be lower than in a clean well?
1
Q3: A: (Answer One Only)
1. A total of 988’ of a 5” DP (ID = 4.276”) has been run in a well closed-ended. Determine:
a. the theoretical volume the pipe should have displaced based on the above
information
b. If 27.5bbl of added volume were measured at surface, can you conclude that
there is a potential influx in the well? Why?

2. The well is filled with salt water; you plan to run 6,000 feet of 3.5in., 9.3 lb/ft (ID 2.992
in.) of tubing into the well. How many gallons of salt water will be displaced when all
6,000 ft have been run , when tubing:
a. Plugged ended
b. Open ended
Q3:B: A well has been shut in on a kick , which pressure gauge reading can be used to
determine formation pressure? (Tow answers with a brief explanation of your answer)
a. Drill pipe pressure gauge on the choke panel.
b. Casing pressure gauge on the choke panel.
c. Drill pipe pressure gauge on the Drillers panel.
d. Choke manifold pressure gauge.

Q4:A: Discuss the Flow checking and when should the flow check be performed?

Q4:B:(Answer One Only)

1. After POOH 488’ of a 5 ½” pipe (ID = 4.67”) with an open end, 3bbl of mud were
necessary to fill up the well. Determine if based on this volume there may be an
influx in the well. If the answer is yes, explain why.

2. How many strokes will it take from the pump to the bit using the following
information?

Drill pipe Capacity = 0.01422 bbl/ft

Drill pipe Length = 9,000 ft
Drill Collar Capacity = 0.00768 bbls/ft.
Drill Collar Length = 1,000 ft.
Surface Line Volume = 3.5 bbls .
Pump output = 0.157 bbls/stk.
Pump rate = 45 stks/min

Good Luck
