Part 1
MUST and HAVE ( GOT ) TO: obligation

Have to and must have similar meanings. They both express the idea
that something is necessary or required
Subj+ have/has to+ infinitive without to

I have to study
She has to study

HAVE TO is the most common expression in everyday use

Everyone has to pass a road test before driving
MUST is used in writing (forms, signs, notices)
You must stop completely at a stop sign
Is also used when the speaker is in a position of power
You must clean your room

We use the correct form of have to for all tenses and forms:
After the accident she had to stay in bed for three months (simple past)
EX: I’ll have to drive tomorrow (future)

Don’t/doesn’t have to and must not have very different meanings

DON’T /DOESN’T HAVE TO express that something is not necessary

COMPARE:

You don’t have to stop here you can also stop round the corner
MUST NOT is used to express prohibition
You mustn’t stop here (You can’t stop here .It’s not allowed)
In the second case mustn’t can be replaced by can’t

Ex:You can’t stop here (because it is not allowed)

CAN- CAN’T
(To be able to)
WE use can/can’t to express abilities in the present
Ex: She can play tennis but she can’t cook

We use could / be able to to talk about abilities in the past

Ex: She could swim but now she’s too old
We couldn’t see the movie as we arrived late
I was able to get in though I didn’t have the ticket

For the future we use ‘-to be able to’

Ex: One day I’ll be able to play like a champion

We use CAN/ COULD also to make requests:

Ex:
Can you tell me your name,please?
Could I have the key of my room, please?

Also the verb ‘to need ‘ can be a modal verb in the questions and in
the negative sentences in the present tense
Ex.
Need she talk to you? (modal) Deve (lei) parlare con te?
Does she need to talk to you?(not modal)

* In entrambi I casi il significato non cambia e non è sempre utilizzato

come verbo modale
