Must
W przypadku czasownika must, podmiot lub osoba mówiąca zgadza się z pewną
koniecznością – w pewien sposób sam na siebie tę konieczność nakłada.

I must buy her a gift. - Muszę kupić jej prezent.

I must wake up earlier. - Muszę budzić się wcześniej.

I must exercise more. - Muszę więcej ćwiczyć.

Have to
Czasownik have to również oznacza konieczność, jednak w przypadku tego czasownika,
konieczność, o której mowa, jest na podmiot lub osobę mówiącą narzucona – sam podmiot
nie musi się z nią zgadzać.

I have to arrive at work on time. - Muszę dojeżdżać do pracy na czas. – My boss says so. - Mój

szef tak mówi.

I have to see the dentist. - Muszę odwiedzić dentystę. – My wife suggests so. - Moja żona mi to

sugeruje.

I have to call my boss. - Muszę zadzwonić do mojego szefa. – My supervisor ordered me to do

that. - Mój przełożony nakazał mi to zrobić.

Uwaga! W przypadku form przeczących, czasowniki do not have to (don't have to) i must
not (mustn't) diametralnie zmieniają swoje znacznie. Czasownik don't have to oznacza „nie
musieć", ale bez zakazu – wybór należy do osoby:

You don't have to water the plants. - Nie musisz podlewać roślinek. – You can do it if you

like, but it isn't a necessity. - Możesz to zrobić, ale nie jest to koniecznością.

Czasownik mustn't oznacza mocny zakaz – pod żadnym pozorem nie wolno czegoś robić:

One mustn't litter the streets. - Nie wolno zaśmiecać ulic.
