-These refers to PLACE or DIRECTION.
- ここ Refers to a place NEAR the SPEAKER.
- そこ Refers to a place NEAR the LISTENER.
- あそこ Refers to a place FAR from the SPEAKER and LISTENER.
- こちら、そちら and あちら are just the same, but more POLITE to use.
Note: When the speaker regards the listener as sharing his/her territory, the
place where they both are is designated by word ここ。(See Fig 2)

- Using this pattern, you can explain where a place, a thing or a person is.

Examples:
1. おてあらいは あそこ です。 The rest room is there.
2. でんわは ２かい です。 The telephone is on the second floor.
3. やまださんは じむしょ です。 Mr. Yamada is in the office.

An interrogation to ask how much.
Example:
Ｑ：この ネクタイ は いくら ですか？ How much is this necktie?
Ａ： 1,500 えん です。 1,500 yen.

どこ・どちら
どこ means “WHERE”.
どちら means “WHICH DIRECTION”. You can also use this as “WHERE” to ask politely.
Examples:
1. おてあらいは どこ です？ Where is the rest room?
Answer: あそこです。 It’s there.
2. エレベーターはどちらですか？ Where is the elevator?
Answer: あちらです。 It’s in that direction. (or. It’s there)

どこ and どちら is also used to ask the name of a country, company, school or any
place or organization a person belongs to. You CANNOT use なん (What)。
Examples:
1. がっこうは どこ ですか？ What is the name of your school?
✖ がっこうは なん ですか？ This is Grammatically incorrect.
2. かいしゃは どちらですか？ What company do you work for?

In this chapter, we will learn another use of this particle.
1. When N1 is the name of a country and N2 is a product, it means that N2 is
made in that country.
2. When N1 is the name of a company and N2 is a product, it means that N2 is
made by that company.
Examples:
これは どこ の コンピューター ですか？
… 日本のコンピューターです。
…. ＩＭＣのコンピューターです。

Where is this computer made?

(or it could mean, who is the maker of this computer?)
Answer:
Possibility 1: It is made in Japan.
Possibility 2: It is made by IMC.

The prefix お is added to a word concerning the listener or third person in order
to express the speaker’s respect to the person.

Examples:
1. おくには どちら ですか？ Where are you from? (lit. Where is your country)
2. おかいしゃは どこ ですか？ What is your work? (lit. Where is your company?)

7. エレベーターは こちら です。 (The elevator is here.)
8. これは にほん の じどうしゃ です。 (This is a car made in Japan.)
9. これは どこ の じどうしゃ ですか。 (Where is this car made from?)
10. この ネクタイは 1,500 えん です。 (This necktie is 1,500 yen)
11. この ネクタイは いくら ですか。 (How much is this necktie?)

A: すみません、おかいしゃは どちら ですか？
Ｂ：ＡＧＳ です。
Ａ：なん の かいしゃ ですか？
