Discussion # 2: Prestressed Concrete

ADVANTAGES OF PRESTRESSED CONCRETE

1. The spans of prestressed beams and girders are longer compared with that of reinforced concrete.
2. Consumption of materials like concrete and steel is reduced.
3. These members have more resistance to shear forces.

DISADVANTAGES OF PRESTRESSED CONCRETE

1. Prestressed concrete requires high-quality dense concrete of high strength. Perfect quality concrete
in production, placement and compaction is required.
2. The unit cost of high strength materials being used is higher.
3. Construction requires perfect supervision at all stages of construction.

Pictures of structures here in the Philippines where Prestressed Concrete Design is applied

1. Agas-Agas Bridge - The Agas-Agas Bridge is a prestressed concrete beam bridge on the Pan-
Philippine Highway.
2. Mactan-Mandaue Bridge - Carved in 44 hectares of picturesque oceanfront, Okada Manila is set to
become Entertainment City's iconic integrated resort.

3. Okada Manila - Mandaue bridge is one of the two bridges spanning Mactan channel connecting the
islands of Cebu and Mactan.
