Lesson
Different Regions of
1 Electromagnetic Spectrum

What’s In

In your Grade 8 you have learned that waves is a traveling disturbance that
propagates through space and is capable of transferring energy. You also learned
that different characteristics of waves as well as its classifications. To recall
important lessons about waves let us try this activity.

A. DIRECTION: Identify the different parts of the wave. You may refer your
answer on the definitions given below. Write your answer on a separate
sheet of paper.

Crest- highest point of the wave

Line of origin- the original position of the medium

Wavelength –the distance between one crest to another.

Trough- lowest point of the wave

Amplitude- the distance from the line of origin to the crest or trough of the
wave.

4
B. DIRECTION: Fill in the missing letters to complete the chart below.
Copy the chart and answer on 1 whole sheet of paper.

Good Job! How did you find the activity? Have you easily complete all the words
related to our topic?

Waves can be classified as mechanical waves and electromagnetic waves. Mechanical

waves are waves that can be propagated with the use of medium like air, water and
other materials. Electromagnetic waves is a waves that are produced and propagated
without any medium and is travelling faster in vacuum like the speed of light (3x10 8m/s).
Electromagnetic Spectrum is the collection of all electromagnetic waves. These EM
Waves propagates by transferring energy from a vibrating electrons and magnetic
field. Electromagnetic waves have a significant functions that affect our lives from
providing us technologies that link to our basic needs to helping medical health
companions to treat severe diseases like cancer.
However, there are some EM Waves that may cause harm to humans and to the
environment. In our daily life we encounter these waves unconsciously, in which only
visible lights can be seen with our unaided eyes.

Hope you enjoy the activity! Now, you may take a short break
and drink a glass of water because the next activity will test not only
your knowledge but also your singing skills. Have fun!

5
What’s New

Songs have been used by composers to express thoughts and lessons to their
listeners. Now, listen to the song entitled “Electromagnetic Spectrum Song” by Jam
Campus and then, organize the thoughts expressed in the song by answering the
following questions below.

https :// www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-9Lkq-3XAo

DIRECTION: Fill each blank with the correct answer. Write your answer on a separate sheet
of paper.
1. Electromagnetic spectrum is consist of different kinds of radiation. Based from
the song, the natural source of radiation is ______________.

2. Low frequency radiations are composed of ________, _________and _________.

3. _________ can see through skins and penetrates through mild and soft skin.
4. The shortest waves in the electromagnetic spectrum is ______________.

5. Visible light is just a small fraction of all types of radiation, and is made up of
different radiations such as _____,_____,_____,_____,______,_______,_______.

6. __________,__________ and ________ are electromagnetic waves that are harmful

to living things.

7. Waves that can be seen with unaided eyes ____________.

8. ____________ consists of longest waves.

9. ________ that can be detected by heat from living things.

10. _______ is a radiation that can be harmful to human beings, when exposed to
the sun it may cause sunburn.

It sounds good! Did you sing the song out loud? I hope you enjoy the activity
and grasp some facts about the topic.

6
What is It

Figure 1. Shows the electromagnetic spectrum which consists of different

electromagnetic waves. The waves can be categorized as low-frequency waves, visible
light and high-frequency waves. As discuss in Grade 8 the spectrum of visible light,
is composed of ROYGBIV (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet) light.
Low frequency waves are consists of radio waves, microwaves and infrared waves,
while high-frequency waves refers to ultraviolet rays, X-rays and gamma rays.

Different Types of Electromagnetic Waves

RADIO WAVES

• has a frequency 3 Hz to 300 Hz

• James Clerk Maxwell who made the first prediction about radio waves but it
was Heinrich Hurtz who showed that radio waves can be produced and
transmitted.
• has a lowest frequency and longest wavelength that makes it suitable for
telecommunication.
• Originates from the vibration of electrons which came from a natural
phenomenon like lightning and astronomical objects. Artificial radio waves
can be generated thru the use of transmitter, received by radio receiver,
broadcasting satellites and computer networks.

Figure 2. Radio waves

7
MICROWAVES

• Ranges from 300 MHz (3 x 108 Hz) to 300 GHz (3x 1011 Hz).
• it has a frequency higher than the frequency of radio waves.
• The prefix “micro” in microwaves signifies that it has a micrometer
wavelengths compared to traditional radio waves.

https://revisionworld.com/gcse-revision/physics/electromagnetic-radiation/radio-waves-microwaves

Figure 3. Microwaves
INFRARED

• has a frequency extending from 300 GHz (3x1011 Hz) to THz (4.05x1014 Hz).
• It has a frequency higher than microwave and lower than the visible light.
• Infrared radiation is also called heat radiation so it can be detected using a
thermometer.
• It was being discovered when the Scientist Frederick William Herschel noticed
that there is an increased of temperature in the thermometer beyond the red
part of the spectrum, when he is trying to measure the air temperature.

Figure 4. Infrared waves

8
VISIBLE LIGHT

• it is the only EM waves that is visible to unaided eyes.

• It lies between infrared and ultraviolet rays.
• When visible light strike on a prism, the white light will split to different colors
such as red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.
• They are arranged in decreasing wavelength from red to violet.

Figure 5. Visible Lights

ULTRAVIOLET RAYS

• has a frequency extends from 790 THz (7.90x1014 Hz) and 30 PHz (3x1016 Hz).
• It has a frequency higher than the frequency of visible light and lower than
the frequency of X-rays.
• It is also known as UV rays or UV radiation. Too much exposure to sunlight
may cause sunburn
• Ultraviolet means “beyond violet”, ultra came from the Latin word beyond and
violet is the visible light that contains highest frequency. During the
experiment conducted by Johann Wilhelm Ritter he noticed that the silver
chloride-soaked paper becomes darkened when an invisible ray beyond the

X-RAYS

• has a frequency lies between 30 PHz (3x 1016 Hz) and 30 EHz (3x1019 Hz).
• It has second to the highest frequency therefore it contains higher energy than
the ultraviolet rays.
• It can damage tissues.
• It has the ability to penetrate opaque materials, it can pass through soft
tissues but can filtered by dense materials like the bone.
• Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen conducted an experiment about cathode ray when
observed a faint green glow from the screen. He discovered that these invisible
rays coming from the tube were passing through the cardboards, books and
papers on his desk. He wrote “X” to indicated that they were an unknown type
of radiation.

GAMMA RAYS

• has a frequency higher that 30 eHz (< 3 x1019 Hz).

• It is the most energetic electromagnetic wave in the spectrum for it has the
highest frequency and shortest wavelength.
• Due to its high energy gamma rays may harm human beings and the
environment.
