COURSE CODE: EDUC. 110
MODULE #: WEEK 1 and 2
COURSE TITLE: PREPARATION AND EVALUATION OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS
TOPIC: Roles of Instructional Materials
Basic Principles in Materials Development/types of IM’s
DISCUSSION QUESTION:

1. Why is instructional important in teaching?

 Instructional material is important because they can significantly increase student

achievement by supporting student learning. This process aids in the learning process
by allowing the students explore the knowledge independently as well as providing
repetition.

 An Instructional material is a device developed or acquired to assist or facilitate

teachers in transmitting, organized knowledge, skills and attitude to the learners
within an instructional situation. It is an indispensable tool in the teaching and
learning process. Learners learned best if teachers present materials for active
learning. Studies has shown that inadequate use or lack of instructional materials
negates the objective of teaching. Moreover, it is also observed that participation of
learners and their performances in classroom is affected, if it does not totally depend,
on the use of instructional materials.

For example in Mathematics, pupils do appreciate the lessons more when they are
presented with visual images aside from numbers. The lessons become more
interesting when the images are moving and requires interaction. Besides, learners
today belong to what we call as Generation Z. This generation think and process
information differently. They are no longer the people the educational system was
designed to teach.

2. In your own opinion, is using authentic materials a burden for teachers?

In my own opinion using authentic materials became a burden to teachers when they use
it to wrong level of learners, authentic materials are not advisable or recommended to
preschoolers/pre-intermediate because they impose overburden to on both teachers and
learners. In terms of learners, they might discourage learners who are expected to lack
vocabulary and structures. In terms of teachers, they demand many preparations in order to suit
the level and ability of learners. Guariento & Morley (ibid) note that: At lower levels, the use of
authentic materials may cause students to feel demotivated and frustrated since they lack many
lexical items and structures used in the target language. The use of authentic materials is a
burden for the instructors teaching beginning students, as they have to spend a lot of time to
prepare for authentic materials regarding the ability level of the students. In spite of this
negative view, I believe that the advantages of using authentic materials in teaching learners,
outweigh the disadvantages, and they are still a vital approach which should be adopted by
teachers, in order to support their learners' language learning process, as proven by a number of
researchers.

ESSAY:
1. What are the benefits of instructional materials to teachers and students?

The Benefits of Instructional materials for teachers are as follows; it provides

materials for presentation of new items for reinforcement and practice, provide
materials for teaching particular skills, areas of languages and other special difficulties.
It also guides teacher on the methods and techniques in introducing the lessons and
the series of exercises for teaching concepts. It gives them also more opportunity to
make the best use of their time and skills to do more real teaching. While IM’s is also
beneficial for Students because it concretizes syllabus, provide opportunity for
individual work in or outside the classroom and allows them to follow a course of
study with little help from teachers

2. What is the adapting material’s purpose?

The purpose of adaptation is to bridge the gap between the materials and his/her
learners’ need. Adaptation is a very practical activity carried out by teachers in order to
make their work more relevant to the learners with whom they are in day–to-day contact.
For a material to be effective to learners’ teachers may do adaptation by modifying, adding
or deleting, reorganizing contents, addressing omissions, modifying task and extending task
according to their learners’ need.

3. As a teacher how can you make instructional materials attractive to learners?

For an instructional material to be attractive it must be attention-grabber, means that

the materials could catch the eyes of the student wherein it must be visually pleasant.
But before considering this, materials should be relevant to the needs and
characteristic of the learner. For example, if you are going to teach science to grade 2
students, a relevant way would be to show pictures and videos. Using a textbook and
reading the text aloud may not prove to be an attractive material. Grade 2 students
have a short attentions span, so the materials have to be broken down into smaller
parts. Second is the materials should be timely, the materials have to reflect what is
happening currently in the community. For example, if you are going to teach Health
to grade 8 students, a timely material would be about vices. Nowadays, teens get
hooked on online games or online activities that they tend to forget to follow a
healthy routine.
REFLECTION:

In your own opinion, as a future teacher what makes a successful lesson?

I believe that a lesson became successful when your learners met the objectives you set with the
lesson. Apart from that a lesson must also be planned to be successful, you have also to keep
your student engaged in the lesson proper and make sure that the lesson is being understood by
the students. When students are engaged, they have little time to get off-task. The
engagement of a student is a key goal. A teacher has to know the students well enough to
create tasks and questions that allow all students to participate actively, to contribute
equally and to discover the brilliance each of them possess right where they are. After
which teacher can make some assessment to see if the students learn something or allow
them to provide feedback/s.
