Optional equipments:

 A travelling sensor CAD40.

 Radio transmission RAC2 or RAC3.

2. General safety recommandations.

The installation of the AC243 system must be performed by a qualified person, trained by SMIE for
this purpose otherwise SMIE declines any responsibility.
For training on installation and servicing of the AC243 system, contact SMIE.
There is no component inside the system that can be repaired by the user.

Switching off the AC243 system:

1. Disconnect the interconnection cable from the IM45 and install the neutralization plug.
2. Switch off the AC243 main power contactor.
ATTENTION: This product belongs to category A. It can create radio interferences in a residential
environment. In this case the user may have to engage appropriate actions.

3. Functionality of the AC243.

The purpose of the driver help system AC243 is to solve problems created by:
The interference between cranes, on multi-cranes sites,
 The protection significant zones.
In France, the system enables work sites to conform to the regulation of the French Ministry of
Work and Professional Training dated 6th March 1991.
The AC243 controls interference areas jib/jib and jib/counter-jib by creating a safety envelope
around the trolley of the high crane, and around the jib, counter-jib and mast of the low crane. The
system takes over by pre-braking/decelerating and/or automatic stopping of the crane when a
collision or a prohibited zone is detected (see §8 and §9).
As standard this system can control up to 18 cranes (cable link), each crane interfering with a
maximum of 4 others.

Operation principle.

7. Zoning operation principle.

The AC243 system intervenes automatically on the crane mechanisms in order to ensure its
complete halting in direction of the “danger”.
The slowdown angle in orange depends on the necessary angle (labelled β on the diagram) for the
jib to completely stop when it is working at full speed in the most unfavourable conditions (wind and
load).
To overcome its inertia, the stopping of the jib is achieved by initially reducing the slewing speed.
In practice, the AC243 adapts the slowdown angle according to the slewing speed.
A safety distance (2m minimum) is added to the area to be protected. It varies with the risks and
specific requirements of the construction site.

8. Tracking operation principle (Anti-collision).

The AC243 system intervenes automatically on the crane mechanisms in order to ensure its
complete halting in direction of the “danger” and in a safety envelope (labelled α on the diagram):
For a low crane (labelled G1 on the diagram), the safety envelope « protects » the jib and
the counter-jib.
For a high crane (labelled G2 on the diagram), the safety envelope « protects » only the
hoist ropes.
To overcome its inertia, the stopping of the jib is achieved by initially reducing the slewing speed.

9. Safety features.
In order to ensure that sites conform to the regulation of the French Ministry of Work and
Professional Training dated 6th March 1991, the devices work in a « positive safety » mode.
The « positive safety » is ensured in 4 cases of site configuration: (see diagrams below)
 Free slewing.
External default (Communication default between devices).
Internal default (Faulty device or loss of voltage).
 Neutralization.

10. Specific case of a « jib / tower » interference.

The management of the interference between the jib and counter-jib of a low crane and the mast of
a high crane is a standard function of the AC243.
The example below represents 2 cranes on a same travelling track (fig1).
By activating the « jib / tower » function in the AC243 systems, the devices permanently measure
the distance between both cranes and stop the dangerous movements in order to prevent the jib
and counter-jib of the low crane to enter in collision with the tower of the high crane (fig2).
The minimum distance between two cranes (fig3) is equal to the length of the low crane’s counter-
jib plus the distance of the safety area applied (see §8).

3
Specific procedures

11. Operating procedure for a travelling crane.

On some worksites, one or more cranes can be mounted on rail track. In order to take account of
the movement of the crane on its track, it is necessary to equip it with a specific travelling sensor
set on one of the crane’s bogies (figure 1).

The reliability and good operating of the travelling sensor depend entirely on the condition
of the crane’s travelling system (track and bogie).

To prevent any positioning error due to the Fig. 1

wheel slipping on the track, the sensor is
equipped with one or two re-adjustment cells.
Each re-adjustment cell is activated when
passing above a metallic “flag” set on the track
(figure 2).
The flags must remain in good condition
and at their original position.

For each modification of the crane’s track, it is

necessary to contact your installer inn order to
evaluate the modification to be engaged.

To much « slipping » in the travelling position can lead to major malfunction of the anti-collision and
zoning functions (collision, stop to far,…).

It is therefore imperative that the crane

Fig. 2
operator travels above the re-adjustment
flags as often as possible (at least twice a
day) and checks these flags condition
everyday.

12. System neutralization.

a/ Neutralization by key from bottom of crane.

In specific cases (depending on mounting requirements), you can use

the « override key » on the BJ45BS generally located at the bottom of
the crane to neutralize the AC243 system.
When turned to «green » the system is enabled (key removed), when
turned to « red » it is neutralised.
Nota : Neutralization with the key of the BJ45BS can be insufficient in
case of a major breakdown of the AC243. Therefore, it can be
necessary to use the neutralization plug (see procedure below) in
order to complete the function.
The site management can decide to use the « override key » on the BJ45BS for one reason only:
To discriminate between AC243 system and crane failure.
Once the crane neutralized, its movements are unrestricted. There is no more interference control
nor forbidden areas for the concerned crane. In order to ensure maximum safety on the worksite,
the systems of the other cranes consider the whole area where the overriden crane could enter as
forbidden but keeps managing other interference areas (see §9).

b/ Neutralization by the neutralization plug.

To neutralize the AC243, disconnect the plug from the IM45 , then connect the
« neutralization plug » on the plug .

The neutralization plug can only be used for:
1. Crane mounting or dismantling operations.
2. Safety system Configuration.
3. AC243 or crane failure investigation.

At the end of each installation, the override key and neutralization

plug are given to the site manager.
