Assignment (Subject: Ch.E.

202 Fluid Dynamics)

(Due Date: 6th February 2017)

Solve the following numerical Problems

1. Consider the “tee” junction in water pipeline. The main line of the tee is 6in. (nominal)
diameter copper pipe, and the branch is 4in. (nominal) diameter copper pipe. A steady flow of
water at 60°F enters the main line with an average velocity of 10ft/sec and leaves the main line
with an average velocity of 7ft/sec. Find the water velocity, mass flow rate, and volumetric flow
rate in the branch line.
2. Water is being added to a storage tank at the rate of 500gal/min. at the same time water
flows out of the bottom through 2in. inside diameter pipe with an average velocity of 60ft/sec.
The storage tank has an inside diameter of 10ft. Find the rate at which the water level rises or
falls.

3. Water at 10°C enters the horizontal venturi tube as shown below (Fig 1) with the uniform
and steady velocity of 2m/sec and an inlet pressure of 150kPa. Find the Pressure at the throat, 2,
where the diameter d = 3cm and at the exit, 3, where d = 6cm.

4. A city has a fire truck whose pump and hose can deliver 1000gal/min with the nozzle
velocity of 120ft/sec. The tallest building in the city is 100ft high. The firefighters hold the
nozzle at an angle of 75° form the ground. Find the minimum distance the fighters must stand
from the building to put out a fire on the roof without the aid of a ladder. The firefighters hold
the hose 5ft above the ground. Assume that the water velocity is not reduced by air resistance.
5. Workout the velocity of efflux from the nozzle located in the wall of open reservoir (Fig
2). Water flows from a large tank, open to atmosphere, through a 10cm diameter well rounded
aperture in its sides. The free surface of water is 5m above the center line of the aperture.
Calculate the velocity of jet issuing from the hole and the discharges. If a 90° elbow is placed at
the exit from aperture, determine how high the water will reach?

6. A closed tank 1m x 1.25m in plan x 4.5m high and weighing 1175N is filled with water
to a depth of 3m (Figure 3). A hole in one of the side walls has an effective area 7.5cm2 and is
located at 20cm above the tank bottom. If the coefficient of friction between the ground and the
wheels is 0.012, determine the air pressure in the tank that is required to set it in motion.

7. A fireman holds a nozzle of fire hose for extinguishing the fire (Figure 4). Will the nozzle
be pushed toward him or away from him? Explain A disc weighing 75N is so mounted that it
moves freely along a vertical axis, the plan of disc thereby remaining horizontal. Directly below
the disc is 6.5cm diameter nozzle which delivers a vertical stream of water with efflux velocity
of 7.5m/sec. After striking the disc, the jet gets deflected horizontally. Determine how high
above the nozzle will the disc be held in equilibrium by the force of jet?
