Problem Definition

At the community of Portsmouth, located in Portmore, St. Catherine, the people find it difficult

to get customers for the rental or selling of their houses. From our current knowledge we know

that there were 8 houses available for rent/sale that have not gain much traction over the past 4

months. It was hypothesized that the number of customers (potential buyers) will increase

exponentially if their houses are advertised on a website.

FACT FINDING PROCESS

The fact-finding process consist of the Interview with the residents of Portsmouth and

Questionnaires issued to the residents that are currently trying sell or rent house(s).

The questionnaire consist of 4 questions, 3 closed ended and 1 opened ended. They were issued

to 12 house owners trying to rent or sell.

From the question ‘How do you advertise your house for rental or sale?’75% of the house

owners choose ‘by face-to-face interactions’, 17% of house owner choose ‘use of social media’

and 8% choose use of website. From the results obtained it can be said that there is a lack of

proper advertising.

From the question ‘Which of the Information Technology solutions do you think would best

improve your chances of getting potential buyers?’, 7(58%) of house owners choose ‘Design a

website with pictures and/or video of houses on sale or rental’ and 5(42%) choose ‘Design a

social media page with pictures and/or video of houses on sale or rental’.

Interview

The interview was held with the residents of Portsmouth. About 60% of 300 housing lots were

included in the interview. It consisted of two main questions. The questions were open ended.

1)Are you selling or renting a house within the community?

1b) If yes, would you take part in a research for my Internal Assessment for Information
Technology?

3) Do you know anyone selling or renting a house within the community?

The questionnaires were handed to the eligible and willing residents obtained from the
interviews.

Identification of Possible Solutions

After using the various fact-finding technique in the effort to evaluate and correct the issue

identified, the following solutions were suggested:

1). Design a website with pictures and/or video of houses on sale or rental. This solution was

suggested because major of respondents thought the creation of a website would be the best

course of action. It would improve the overall presentation of the houses and create a central

location for buying, selling and rental of houses.

2). Design a social media page with pictures and/or video of houses on sale or rental. It was

thought that a social media page would be very useful because there is a lot of traffic(people) on

social media platforms which would make the chances of getting potential buyers very high.

Evaluation of Possible Solutions

Solution 1

Design a website with pictures and/or video of houses on sale or rental. To carry out this solution

the following are needed: Wix (website creator), HP-laptop, access to the internet, Training, and

Camera(Galaxy S7). Training to create a website would take approximately 1 week and the cost

for training would be free.

Requirements Cost($)
Wix Free
HP-laptop Free
Internet Access Free
Camera (for photos and videos) Free
Domain Name and Web Hosting 1400
Total Cost 1400

This website would be a profit website, those whom wish to advertise on the website would have

to pay a fee. It would take approximately 3 weeks to complete the creation of the website. As it

relates to the legality no laws would be broken.

Solution 2

Design a blog with uploaded notes, past papers and answer sheets. To carry out this solution the

following are needed: Wix (website creator), HP-laptop, access to the internet, Training,

Social Media Platform (Instagram, Facebook, Free

etc.).

Camera (for photos and videos) Free
Total Cost Free

This would be a non-profit social media page. It would take approximately 2 weeks to complete

the creation of the social media page. The creation of the social media page would be legal.

Selection of Solution

We have decided to choose solution 1. Solution 1 was chosen because it can generate revenue, a

website page also gives a sense of professionalism as opposed to social media pages which are

known for creating of fake identities for scamming, and lastly solution 2 could not have been

used because of the requirements of this internal assessment.

10 | P a g e
Justification of Solution

Solution 1 was chosen seeing that it is has a higher successful and continuity rate than solution 2.

Solution 1 will benefit the students. According to the fact-finding process as the majority of

respondents are lacking in advertising and a market to display there house(s), this website will

solve that problem excellently and the majority of respondents did choose the website as their

preferred solution.
