1. Tell us about yourself.
 My name is…………………… and I am…… years old.
 I have a degree from………………… University in……………………… and a CGPA
of……….
 I’m a highly organized professional and analytical person who has the right
qualities, attributes and temperament to become a competent pilot/ pilot instructor
with your airline.
 Starting from the day that I applied to this job I have been preparing myself to be
the best applicant for this position.
 Having researched your history and your future plans, you are clearly an airline who
has a strong reputation amongst your passengers and I feel I would be supported in
the role to enable me to carry out my duties to the high standards required.
 I chose to study engineering, because I knew I will be more familiar with the aviation
technology. As expected engineering was so fulfilling that it made me want to know
more about the technology behind flying an airplane and learn how to actually fly it.
And that’s when I really decided to become a pilot.
 Now, I fully understand and acknowledge that, with the role of a pilot/ flight
instructor, comes a huge amount of responsibility, and the experiences I have
gained in life so far, coupled with my strong work ethics and dedication, make me
the perfect candidate for this position.

2. Why do you want to be a pilot or a flight instructor?

 It isn't about my career it’s my passion. Anyone can drive a car or bus .but not everyone
can be a pilot. I want to be the one .Plus I am very good at multitasking skills and
decision making. And my dream is to do a world trip so what other is better than to get
paid for what you love.
 Also I am fond of cars and a luxury lifestyle and I am sure my career at Ethiopian airlines
will give me this.
 One of the greatest benefits that flight instruction offers is a possibility to continue to
learn through teaching, and one of the best ways to learn is through teaching.
 Becoming a flight instructor allows me to build my flight hours quickly.
 Money is great, but it is not everything.

5
 Airline pilot is rewarded with a good salary but being a flight instructor is a very
different
type of reward, as it allows me to help individuals fulfill their dreams of flying.
 Weather I am instructing in a cockpit or the classroom, one of the most significant
rewards of being a flight instructor is teaching others to learn to fly.
 Therefore, I want to be that person who takes big responsibility and challenge and who
is
proud of himself and what he does and succeeded in training others.

3. Why should we hire you?

 Answer 1: I believe I would be the best candidate that fits the job. I have read the
job descriptions carefully and understand what this job does and needs. I am
confident that my knowledge, skills and past experiences would bestow
capabilities and power on me to do this job well. I am more suitable to do this job
than any other candidates.

 Answer 2: I have been looking forward to the coming of this day for a long time
and I have been preparing for it very well. It would be an exciting thing for me to
join your company and contribute my knowledge and skills to you, and I believe I
really can do something for you. That would be a wonderful thing for me to be
hired by Ethiopian Airlines.
 Answer 3: In the long run, it is promising that I could not only do a good job but
also take a leadership role in my work. I have been improving my people skills such
as interact, talk, understand, empathize, and connect with people and as a pilot
that will make me more and more valuable in your company with all my aptitudes
being realized.

 Answer 4: Why should you hire me? Because I am good. I am a top-notch team player
and communicator and I believe I'd be an asset for Ethiopian. My skill set seems to be a
perfect match for what you're looking for. In addition, I enjoy working with people, and
would welcome the opportunity to be a part of your team. In a nutshell, you would not
regret for your decision to hire me. And I would try my best to do a good job for you. It
is a win-win game, isn't it?

Edit1: Never forget to mention what makes you unique.

4. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Trainee pilots

6
 I want to accumulate more than 1500 (fifteen hundred) flight hours to become a captain
and during this time Not only would I get all the training for my role, but I would be on the
fast track to becoming a Senior Captain. That’s my top career goal.
 I’m also the type of employee that likes to hit the ground running and jump into tasks as
soon as possible. So, over the next five years, I see myself taking on as many complex
duties as the position requires a lot of it.
 By the end of that period, I want to say that I will have built lasting skill and expertise. I
want to say that I want to be one of the best chief Pilots on the team. I wouldn’t mind
becoming someone who could train and mentor other trainee pilots when the time comes
as well.

Trainee pilot instructors

 I want to accumulate more than the necessary flight hours to become a certified flight
instructor (CFI) and during this time Not only would I get all the training for my role, but I
would be on the fast track to becoming a senior and more experienced instructor. That’s
my top career goal.
 I’m also the type of employee that likes to hit the ground running and jump into tasks as
soon as possible. So, over the next five years, I see myself taking on as many complex
duties as the position requires a lot of it.
 By the end of that period, I want to say that I will have built a lasting skill and expertise. I
want to say that I want to be one of the best instructors that Ethiopian have on staff. I
wouldn’t mind becoming someone who could train and mentor others trainee pilot
instructors when the time comes as well.

5. What are your greatest weaknesses?

 Sample answer 1: I’m not very good at gauging how long a task will take me to finish. I
quite often underestimate the time it will take to do smaller jobs. The result is that I don’t
delegate enough time to larger, more important projects. I have to rush to get things done.
Sometimes I miss deadlines. To address the issue, I’ve started taking online time
management courses and I have seen a significant change on my time management in the
past year.
 Sample answer 2: I would say my greatest weakness is my writing skills. I’ve always been
a technical, math person. I like crunching numbers. But when it comes to words I get
tongue-tied and forget the rules. I’ve started using apps to make sure my emails are correct
and improve my writing skills faster. The app gives the activity a tech feel, which makes
the whole thing more comfortable and improve my skills much faster as well.

7
6. Talk about your greatest strength.

 Answer 1: I noticed that the being a pilot requires my attention to detail as a desirable
skill for the position. I’d say that attention to detail is, in fact, my greatest strength.
(give your own example from past experiences)

 Answer 2: My greatest strength is staying calm under pressure. I can also work to tight
deadlines without making any mistake. For example, I was once asked to complete a
project that fell through the cracks. My editor discovered the mistake two hours before
the deadline. It was an important piece that gave our publication a scoop on the topic in
question. Not only did the piece have to go out on time, but it had to be perfect. I
hunkered down and wrote. The result, the article was on time and acclaimed.

7. What was your final year project about?

Memorize your thesis abstract/summary. Pretty simple

8. How do you feel about the future of Ethiopian Airlines?

It’s already a leading aviation group in Africa.
And its value proposition (quality and price) of any service the airline provides is always better
than its competitors. I hope it will be great airlines for everything in the future.

9. What do you know about the position (flight instructor) and its
responsibilities?
 Be professional at all times
 Present a professional appearance and personal habits
 Continue professional development
 Motivate the student
 Approach each student as an individual
 Criticize constructively
 Decision making
 The ability to communicate effectively

8
10. Why do you apply for this particular position? Why do you want to work
here in Ethiopian airlines?
 I’d love the opportunity to work with a company that’s making a difference.
 Finding a company with a positive work environment and values that align with my own
has remained a priority throughout my job search, and Ethiopian airlines ranks at the
top of the list.

9
12. Explain parts of the aircraft.

13. How does an airplane fly?

The wings and tails of the airplanes have many movable parts. The most fascinating thing
about the whole wing, and the different parts of it, is that they form a very special shape in
fluid mechanics. That is the airfoil shape.

10
Just by understanding the physics behind this simple shape will allow you to completely
understand airplane physics. An airfoil produces a lift force when moved relative to the air.
This lift force makes an airplane fly. How is this lift produced? The airfoil produces a downwash
as shown.

This causes a pressure difference at the top and bottom of the airfoil, and hence produces lift.
Generally, the higher the angle of attack, the greater will be the downwash, and therefore the
lift force.
A greater airspeed also increases the lift force significantly.
In short, there are three techniques to increase the lift of an airfoil. Let's apply this airfoil
knowledge to the airplane.
1. If we activate the flaps and slats, it increases the downwash and increases the lift.
2. The ailerons can move up and down, and for that reason, the lift force can decrease and
increase respectively.
3. At the tail of the airplane, you can see two attachments, the rudder and the elevators. By
adjusting the elevators, you can control the vertical force on the tail. By adjusting the rudder,
you can control the horizontal force.

14. Controlling the aircraft

Takeoff
To get the airplane to take off from the ground, what you have to do is increase the lift force
using various techniques and make sure that this force is more than the gravitational pull.
Pilots apply all of the three lift increase techniques together for a successful takeoff.
1. First, the speed of the airplane is increased by increasing the thrust of the engines.
When the airplane's speed is high enough…

11
2. The pilots activate the flaps and slats then lift is further increased due to this. When the
airplane is ready for takeoff,
3. They activate the elevators upwards. The tail force tilts the airplane as shown, and the
angle of attack of the airfoil will be increased. The lift is suddenly increased due to this,
and the airplane takes off.
How is the engine able to generate thrust?
Modern airplanes use special kinds of engines called turbofan engines for this purpose. In this,
the fans reaction and the reaction force of the exhaust give the necessary thrust force.
By burning more fuel, the pilot can achieve more thrust. The fuel of an airplane is stored inside
the wings. After the takeoff, next comes the climb phase of the aircraft.
As long as the engine's thrust is more than the drag, the speed of the airplane will keep on
increasing. The greater the speed, the higher will be the lift force. This will cause the airplane
to go up.
When the airplane reaches level flight, there won't be any acceleration or change in altitude.
You can see that with this condition, the thrust should be exactly equal to the drag, and the lift
should be exactly equal to the weight of the airplane.

15. Explain Decent and/or Landing of an aircraft.

To descend the airplane,
What pilots do is decrease the engine's thrust and keep the nose of the airplane down. This is
exactly the opposite of the climb operation.
As the airplane loses speed, it gets ready for landing. At this stage, the flaps and slats are
activated again. These devices also increase the drag. To increase the drag further, a wing
attachment called a spoiler is also activated.
The pilots use one more trick here to reduce the stopping distance, which is reverse thrust.
Here, the engine covers open wide, and the air which was supposed to go backwards is

12
forcefully directed forwards. This will obviously generate reverse thrust, and will make the
stopping of the airplane easier.

Decent:
1. Decrease the engines thrust
2. Keep nose down: i.e. elevator down
3. Activate flaps and slats: increase drag
4. Wing attachment: spoiler is activated to increase drag further.
5. Reverse thrust: air that should be directed backward is forcefully directed forward:
decrease runway and increase drag.

16. Explain the natural laws in a flying aircraft.

Natural law 1: Bernoulli's principle
Let’s say you have a wing (an airfoil) and the air is hitting the wing and moves above (V1) and
below (V2) the wing.

The general idea is that the air above the wing (v1) moves faster and because the air moves
faster a lift is generated.

The lift is caused by the air pressure below the wing (P2) which is bigger than the pressure
above the wing (P1).

13
The essence of Bernoulli's principle and lift is, because of the difference in speeds there is
difference in pressure and lift is created.

(Learn more on: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmDYbnGnhpA)

Natural law 2: Newton’s 3rd law of motion

As the air flows over the top the airplane wing it moves more quickly across the top but air on
the bottom is also deflected down because of the angle of attack of the air and as the air is
deflected down the wing is pushed up.

I.e. The wing exerts a downward force on the air therefore the air exerts an upward force on
the wing.

 Bernoulli's principle with the faster air movement on the top and the reduced pressure
on the top is generating some of the lift and the deflection of the air downward is
generating some of the lift it's a combination of the two both Bernoulli's principle and
Newton's third law are responsible for keeping an airplane in the air.

16
23. Brief history of EAL
Minister of Works and Communications Fitawrari Tafasse Habte Mikael became EAL's first
president and chairman, whereas H. H. Holloway —who was American— was appointed by
TWA as general manager.
The airline had its first fatal accident on 15 July when a DC- 3 crashed en route from Bulchi to
Jimma, killing the pilot.
The second fatal accident took place on 5 September 1961 when another DC-3 crashed shortly
after takeoff from Sendafar; a flight attendant and four passengers lost their lives in the
accident.
It was found that the lack of infrastructure at many airfields, marginal even for DC-3
operations,
was a major contribution.
It was also decided to build a new airport to replace the Lideta Airfield, unable to
accommodate
the Boeing 720 jetliner the company intended to acquire. This was the birth of Bole
International
Airport, where the company set its headquarters.
The firm changed from a corporation to a share company in 1965, and changed its name from
Ethiopian Air Lines to Ethiopian Airlines.
On its 25th anniversary in 1971, the company was ready to continue without foreign assistance.
Since then, Ethiopian Airlines has been managed and staffed by Ethiopian personnel. The first
Ethiopian General Manager was Col. Semret Medhane, appointed in 1971.
In 2018 it was announced that the Ethiopian government would partially or wholly privatize
several state-owned enterprises, amongst them Ethiopian Airlines, although it would retain a
majority stake in key firms, including the airline.
Organization
The Ethiopian government reorganized the airline as a fully owned aviation holding group in
July 2017. The aim was to maximize efficiency, enhance customer service to a global standard,
and ease of long term planning.
The initial group consisted of: The Ethiopian Airports Enterprise(EAE), the Passenger Airline
company, Cargo Airline and Logistics Company, Ethiopian Aviation Academy, Ethiopian
Inflight Catering Services, Ethiopian MRO Services, and Ethiopian Hotel and Tourism Services.
The MRO Services is the largest such operation serving the continent and the Med-Eastern
region; fully accredited by FAA and EASA. The Cargo and Logistical division is expanding to
increase annual capacity to 1.5 million tons.
Head office
Ethiopian Airlines currently has its head office at Bole International Airport, Addis Ababa, but

17
intends to build a new head office facility. A contest for the design was held in 2009, but none
of those plans were proceeded with.
On 16 February 2011, it held a second round, and in September 2011 it was announced that
BET Architect Plc won the contest. The airline stated that the estimated Br300 million complex
will be constructed on a 50,000 m2 (540,000 sq ft) plot at Bole International Airport.
The company that received 4th place in the competition's second round has threatened to take
legal action, accusing the airline of not giving due consideration to the proposed design.
As a long term company policy, in addition to the carrier's main activities, revenues are also
generated by providing aircraft maintenance to foreign airlines and specialist training for both
Ethiopian and foreign trainees.
Every year, pilots and technicians graduate from both the Pilot School, inaugurated in 1964,
and the Aviation Maintenance Technician School, established in 1967
In 2010 Ethiopian adopted "Vision 2025", a 15-year development strategy, under which the
airline anticipates increasing its fleet to 120, the number of destinations to 90, carrying more
than 18 million passengers and 720,000 tonnes (710,000 long tons; 790,000 short tons) of
cargo, with 17,000 employees. ″Vision 2025″ also considers a fourfold expansion of the
capacity building for trainees in the airline's aviation academy
Ethiopian officially joined Star Alliance in December 2011.
Ethiopian Airlines' frequent flyer programs are Sheba Miles and Lufthansa's Miles
It was the first airline in Africa to acquire a Boeing 787 full-flight simulator
In October 2017, the airline took delivery of its first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, making it the first
airline in Africa to take delivery and operate the type
The airline took delivery of its first Boeing 737 MAX 8 in July 2018
According to the Aviation Safety Network records for Ethiopian Airlines, the airline has had 61
accidents and incidents since 1965, plus six more for Ethiopian Air Lines
As of March 2019, these occurrences resulted in 494 deaths.
On 10 March 2019, Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, a 4-month-old Boeing 737 MAX 8, crashed
shortly after takeoff from Addis Ababa en route to Nairobi, killing all 157 people, from more
than 30 different nations on board.
Prior to the 2019 accident, a hijacking was the carrier's deadliest accident, when an aircraft
crashed into the Indian Ocean due to fuel starvation in 1996.
The third-deadliest accident occurred in 2010, when an aircraft crashed into the Mediterranean
Sea shortly after it departed Beirut– Rafic Hariri International Airport, killing all 90 people on
board.
The crash of a Boeing 737-200 in 1988 led to 35 fatalities and ranks as the fourth most deadly
accident experienced by the company.
Ethiopian has been honored as the ‘Best Airline in Africa’ for the third consecutive year at the
Skytrax 2019 World Airlines Awards held in Paris on 18 June, 2019.
Additionally, Ethiopian has won ‘Best Business Class in Africa’ and ‘Best Economy Class in
Africa’ at the award ceremony.
319 trainees graduated in different fields from the Ethiopian Airlines Aviation Academy in 2019
18
Ethiopian started new flights in 2019 to Istanbul (Turkey), Marsellie (France) Garowe and
Bosaso (Somalia) currently has 123 International Passenger and Cargo destinations and 22
Domestic destinations
Provides airframe maintenance, engine maintenance and component maintenance.
