The document discusses dimensioning in engineering drawings. It defines dimensioning as providing the exact lengths, sizes, positions of features etc. on a drawing. It describes different types of lines used such as outline, extension, dimension lines. It discusses two common dimensioning systems - the aligned system where dimensions are above and aligned with dimension lines, and the unidirectional system where dimensions are placed on one side of a broken dimension line. It provides examples of dimensioning an equilateral triangle, square and right angled triangle. It also defines a regular polygon as one that is equiangular and equilateral.

Assistant Professor, Mechanical Engineering GITAM Bangalore Campus Dimensioning Dimensioning ➢Every drawing, whether a scale drawing or a freehand drawing, besides showing the true shape of an object, must supply its exact length, breadth, height, sizes and positions of holes, grooves etc. and such other details relating to the manufacturing of that object.
➢Providing this information on a drawing is called dimensioning.
➢Additional lines, figures, numbers, symbols, notes etc. are used
for this purpose. Types of Lines • Outline or Principal Line: These are Outline Line drawn to represent visible edges and surface boundaries of objects. These are continuous thick lines. • Extension Line: It is a thin continuous line drawn in extension of an outline. • Dimension Line: It is a thin continuous line. Terminated by arrow-heads touching the extension lines or outlines. Dimension Extension Line Line Dimension Lines Types of Lines • Section Line or Hatch lines: These are drawn to make the section visible.. These are continuous thin lines at angle of 45𝑜 . • Leader Line: It is a thin continuous line drawn to connect a note with the feature to which it applies. • Cutting Plane Line: It shows the location of cutting plane. It is long, thin chain line with thick at ends only. • Center Line: These are thin long chain lines used to represent axes of cylindrical, spherical or conical objects Terminated by arrow-heads touching the extension lines or outlines. Dimensioning Systems • Two types of dimensioning systems are commonly used. • Aligned System & Unidirectional System ➢Aligned System: ❖Here, the dimension is denoted in a such a way that it is aligned to the dimension line. ❖The dimension is placed near the middle portion and above of dimension line. Dimensioning Systems ➢Unidirectional System: ❖The dimension is always denoted in one direction such that one can read it from the bottom side of drawing sheet. ❖The dimension line is broken near the middle portion to include the dimension value. Some Examples of Dimensioning Some Examples of Dimensioning Exercise-1 1. Draw an equilateral triangle with 50mm side length and represent proper dimensioning system.
2. Draw a square with side length 50mm.
3. Draw a right angled triangle with two sides as 50mm.
Exercise-2 Exercise-3 Regular Polygon • A regular polygon is a polygon that is equiangular and equilateral.
