CHAPTER 2: SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

The Casing Drive Assembly (CDS) attaches to the bottom of a top drive. It provides a means
to perform the following tasks:
• rotate the casing to make up a joint
• reciprocate the casing
• circulate the casing
• rotate the casing string as required

GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS
The CDS consists of following sub-assemblies:
• Cross-over subs (confirm ratings with Tesco)
• Actuator Assembly (500 ton rating)
• Lower Drive Assembly (Internal Drive or External Drive)
• Link Tilt Assembly (6 ton rating)

The External Lower Drive Assembly is available in two different sizes depending on the size
and weight of the casing:
• 4-1/2 in. to 7 in. (350 ton rating) (318 metric ton rating)
• 7-5/8 in. to 8-3/4 in. (350 ton rating) (318 metric ton rating)
Caution: Different types of casing might have different tonnage rat-
! ings.

The Internal Lower Drive Assembly is available in several sizes depending on the size and
weight of the casing:
• 7 to 7-5/8 in. (290 ton rating) (263 metric ton rating)
• 9-5/8 to 11-7/8 in. (500 ton rating) (454 metric ton rating)
• 13-3/8 in. (500 ton rating) (454 metric ton rating)
• 16 in. (500 ton rating) (454 metric ton rating)
• 18-5/8 in. (500 ton rating) (454 metric ton rating)
• 20 in. (500 ton rating) (454 metric ton rating)
Caution: Different types of casing might have different tonnage rat-
! ings.

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

The single-joint elevators and the Link Tilt Assembly work together to pick up the joint of cas-
ing from the V-door. When the casing is picked up, the elevators are centered with the CDS.
The joint is lowered so that the pin end of the casing is stabbed into the stump. Then, the CDS
is lowered until the top of the joint is aligned so that it is level with the stop bumper on the
CDS.

When in operation, the hydraulic power source will function the actuator.

INTERNAL CASING DRIVE SYSTEM

When you use the APPLY function, the actuator applies force to the connection collar, which
pushes against the split collar. This in turn moves the grapples down, which expands the slip
segments radially to engage the dies onto the inside diameter of the casing. When the casing is
gripped by the CDS, it may be rotated, reciprocated or circulated. When you use the
RELEASE function, the actuator applies force in the opposite direction and the grapples pull
away from the casing.

EXTERNAL CASING DRIVE SYSTEM

When you use the APPLY function, the actuator applies force against the connection collar,
which pushes against the push/pull collar. This applies pressure to the links, which are con-
nected to the slip segments. The links move down, radially contracting the slip segments to
engage the dies onto the outside diameter of the casing. When the casing is gripped by the
CDS, it may be rotated, reciprocated or circulated. When you use the RELEASE function, the
actuator applies force in the opposite direction and the slip segments pull away from the cas-
ing.

POWER
When attached to a top drive, the CDS hydraulics draw power from one of two sources:
• a portable hydraulic power unit, or
• an interface with the top drive.

The CDS has no electrical components.

HYDRAULICS
The hydraulic system operates at 2000 psi and 7 gal/min (when attached to a top drive) or 5.5
gal/min (when attached to the HPU). The minimum flow required to operated the CDS is 5.5
gal/min. Some of the CDS components are regulated at lower pressures.
