What is esthetics?
The philosophy that deals with nature and expression of beauty.

Esthetics VS. Cosmetic Dentistry:

Esthetic dentistry: the art of dentistry in its purest form.

Cosmetic dentistry: the art and science of enhancing a person’s smile and overall
appearance.

Esthetics: no exaggeration; more of natural look

Cosmetic: related to patient’s smile (as operative dentistry)

Fundamentals of esthetics:
1st case: problem is diastema

2nd case: complex and challenging case since several

problems

Color, spacing, occlusion, functional problems, biology

(gum), and esthetic problem… so she needs a
treatment plan (study esthetic of smile)

When a makeover is planned for the

esthetic appearance of a patient’s
teeth, the clinician must have a logical
diagnostic approach that results in the
appropriate treatment plan.

Treatment planning process:

old conventional:

focused more on biology and function where esthetic

comes complementary.

Conventionally focused:

1. Biology
2. Then with time: biology and function
3. Biology and function and esthetics.
Esthetics concerns started from 70-80 years when the adhesive dentistry was
introduced (esthetic restoration)

Contemporary: evaluate the 3 factors together (treatment plan is based on all 3 factors
together)

For example: when concerned about biology of a carious tooth: we make RCT but it is in an
unesthetic position and needs to be extracted for esthetic concerns (if performed treatment
plan based on biology only: waste of time on RCT and no proper treatment plan)

We use in our general treatment plan process conventional approach (named Analogue)

Part of your plan will be planned and implemented digitally (recently can’t depend only on
analogue)

We can treat from A to Z digitally.

Using analogue (5 steps memorable for life)

Step 1: assessment of 3 parameters (group up data to get a diagnosis as step 2)

Biology assessment: caries- RCT- level of bone- extraction

Function assessment: occlusion, TMJ problems, type of bite, condyle

Esthetic assessment: color, size, texture surface, morphology

Step 3: analyze data

Step 4: patient’s approval

Step 5: you can start the sequence.

Digital improves analysis and

communication through mock-up
models

Smile design starting from analysis step

digitally

3D wax-up on it stent (silicon index) to

analyze digitally

Advantages of digital approach:

More predictable with less time.
