Grade & Section: 10-HOPE Activity No. 2

Release the Heat

Objectives:
1. Locate some places on the map where active volcanoes are found.
2. Discuss the connection between the locations of these volcanoes and the locations of active plates.
3. Explain the presence of active volcanoes and mountain ranges along plate boundaries.
Materials: world map, colored pencil (red or orange, and green or brown) map of Earth’s plates
Procedure:
1. Have the map below photocopied and enlarged. This is where you will plot the locations of the volcanoes.
2. Using the world map, locate the places where volcanoes listed in Table 1.1 are found.

Table 1.1 List of Volcanoes and Their Locations

Volcano Location
El Chichon Mexico
Taal Volcano Philippines
Mount Lamington Papua New Guinea
Mount Pelee St. Pierre, French Caribbean Island of Martinique
Mount Pinatubo Philippines
Mount Tambora Indonesia
Nevado del Ruiz Columbia
Mount Unzen Japan
Mount Versuvius Italy
Laki Volcanic System Eastern Iceland
Mount St. Helens Washington, USA
Kilauea Hawaii
Novarupta Alaska, USA
Heard Island Volcano Western Australia, South Indian Ocean
Tengchong Southern China at the border with Burma (Myanmar)

3. On the map of Earth’s plates, draw triangles corresponding to the locations of the volcanoes. Use an orange or red pen for the triangles.
4. Refer to the list of Earth’s tallest and longest mountain ranges in Table 1.2. Locate each using the word map. On the map of Earth’s plates, draw two parallel lines showing the length of
each of the mountains. Use a green or brown pen for your drawing.
Table 1.2 Earth’s Mountain Ranges and their Locations
Mountain Range Location
Andes South America
Rocky Mountains Western Canada and North America
Himalayas Between India and the Tibetan Plateau and west of
China, Nepal, and Pakistan
Sumatran/ Javan Range Indonesia
Brazilian East Coast Range Brazil, South America
Tien Shan Range Central Asia, at the border of Western China,
Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan
Great Dividing Range Eastern Coast of Australia
Western and Eastern Ghats West and East coast of India

5. Analyze your drawings. Relate the locations of volcanoes and mountain ranges to the plates found in the area.

Questions:
1. Describe the distance between the locations of the volcanoes and mountain ranges to the plates near them.
-If you connected it all together. Obviously, it doesn’t form any shapes. But if you see through it, some of the mountains are in the middle of water and some are in land. But as you can
see, every mountains are near beside the ocean.
2. How is the presence of active volcanoes and mountain ranges related to the presence of active plates in an area?
- Active Volcanoes and Mountain Ranges are related to each other because the earth's surface is made up of tectonic plates which means the volcano surface and mountain ranges are
connected together as well as the ground under the ocean and seas. If volcanoes are active and ready to erupt, there is a possibility that it is due to the earth's tectonic plates that are
moving.
3. Do you think it is possible for any of these two landforms to form in a place far from an active plate? Explain your answer.-
-Yes, because plate boundaries are everywhere. No matter where you go. Plate boundaries are always underneath you.
