TITLE Lab 4.

4 ONE-DIMENSIONAL CONSOLIDATION - OEDOMETER TEST

LEVEL OF
OEL 1
OPENNESS
PREAMBLE 1.1 Introduction

Consolidation can be defined as the gradual reduction in volume of a fully

saturated soil of low permeability, due to change of effective stress

1.2 Objectives

1. To determine the consolidation parameters from e vs. log σ' curve, which are:
a. compression index, Cc
b. swelling index, Cs
c. pre-consolidation stress, σ'pc
d. coefficient of volume compressibility, mv

2. To determine the consolidation parameters from time vs. displacement curve,

which are:
a. coefficient of consolidation, cv
b. the initial, primary and secondary compression ratio, (r0, rp & rs)
c. coefficient of volume compressibility, mv
d. coefficient of permeability, k

1.3 Learning Outcomes

By the end of this laboratory work, students should be able:

1. to conduct necessary laboratory works in achieving objective
2. to process raw data into results that can be analysed (if necessary)
3. to analyse result using necessary formulas, tools, etc.
4. to synthesize analysis from laboratory works and information from relevant
literature to provide valid conclusion

PROBLEM 1.4 Problem Statement

STATEMENT
General situation:
Any infrastructure or building might be constructed on a silty or clayey soil, as it
will depend on the geological formation of that area.

Specific condition:
After certain duration of time, the water will dissipate from the soil, thus resulting
in deformation or settlement due to consolidation.

Why it is necessary to conduct:

Therefore, it is necessary to determine the parameters related to the
consolidation settlement of the soil.

WAYS & The experiment are conducted in accordance to:

MEANS
BS1377 Part 5 (1990) Methods of test for soils for civil engineering purposes.
Compressibility, permeability and durability tests. 3. Determination of the one-
dimensional consolidation properties.
