PART A – REDEFINE THE STRATEGIC DIRECTION OF THE BUSINESS

To begin this part, read the following email and its attachment, then complete the tasks that follow:

To: You

From: Gavin Stead (gavin.stead@cbsa.com.au)

Date/time: Monday 9:00AM

Subject: Organisational Change

Attachment: Strategic Plan Overview.docx, Strategic Plan Template.docx

To You,

Welcome to the team and congratulations on being appointed as the Project Manager at CBSA. Because of
the importance of this position, you will be reporting directly to myself, and you will also be part of the CBSA
Board, as you will be providing leadership to the employees on meeting strategic objectives.
Your first task is to plan three new initiatives and integrate them into the strategic direction of the
organisation. To begin this, I would like you to undertake a review of the current Business and Strategic
Plans so that we can plot out the future direction of the organisation based on these new initiatives. I have
attached a portion of the current Strategic Plan for your review.
The organisation is looking to expand to offer consultancy services in the following areas to ensure we
remain competitive and to keep the business growing:
▪ Change management
▪ Customer services
▪ Social media
These roles have been advertised as yet, but I would like you to begin planning for these changes by
redeveloping the Business Plan and Strategic Plan in line with these. You will also need to suggest three
strategic objectives for the organisation. These changes might involve a restructure or changes to the
organisation’s mission, vision, values and goals. At least one strategy must involve an issue that we can
positively promote to the media and community to demonstrate that we are a socially responsible
organisation. Maybe a sustainability strategy? I’ll leave that for you to decide.
Once you have redeveloped the plans, they will be consulted on to make any necessary improvements and
put a development plan in place. As these changes will likely be wide ranging, make sure you research what
our competitors are doing, and keep in mind CBSA’s mission, vision, goals, and values. How will your
strategic objectives align with the organisational structure CBSA has in place? What changes will we need
to make?

Gavin Stead

TASK
This task has been designed so that you can provide strategic and operational leadership skills by reviewing
CBSA’s existing plans has and improving them in line with three new services that they wish to offer.
Refer to the CBSA Business Plan and its policies and procedures (all accessible via the CBSA website) and the
attached Strategic Plan overview to get an understanding of the organisation, its processes and where it is
currently. Review competitors to CBSA by undertaking online research of B2B service providers offering similar
services to understand how their businesses operate and what they do. Then complete the following tasks
based on current state of CBSA, the new services it wants to offer, and what the competition is doing.
Remember you are providing leadership so you have scope to make as many changes as you see fit:
1. Redevelop the Business Plan and make adjustments so that the organisation has a clear vision of what it
needs to do:
▪ Review the current Mission. Is this sufficient or does it need to change? Adjust as necessary.
▪ Review the organisation’s Vision. Is this sufficient or does it need to change? Adjust as necessary.
▪ Review the organisation’s Business Goals. These are the broad goals that the organisation wants to
achieve. Are these sufficient or do they need to change? Adjust as necessary.
▪ Redevelop the Org Chart, including adding the four new job positions being implemented:
− Your role as Project Manager reporting directly to Gavin Stead
− A new role called ‘Change Management Consultant’
− A new role called ‘Customer Service Consultant’
− A new role called ‘Social Media Consultant’
Does the current department structure still work based on the mission, vision and business goals?
Where will the new roles fit in with the existing roles? You should adjust as necessary to ensure that
CBSA has the best organisational structure in place so that business goals can be directly linked to
departmental groups and individuals.
▪ As you are an important part of determining the strategic direction of the organisation you will be a
member of the CBSA Board. Adjust the Business Plan to reflect this change.
▪ Adjust the products/services being offered based on the new job roles and the services they offer
▪ Determine whether current systems and technologies will meet CBSA’s needs and adjust to new
technologies if necessary.
2. Redevelop the Strategic Plan using the Strategic Plan Overview, and the Strategic Plan Template provided:
▪ Document the Mission statement
▪ Document the Vision statement
▪ Review the core values. Are these sufficient or do they need to change? Adjust and document as
necessary.
▪ Document a SWOT analysis for CBSA including at least one for each of the following:
− Strength
− Weakness
− Opportunity
− Threat
▪ Document a PEST analysis for CBSA including at least one for each of the following:

− Political factor
− Economic factor
− Social factor
− Technological factor
▪ Three strategic objectives that the organisation should plan to achieve in the coming financial year.
These are the measurable goals that the organisation wishes to achieve and should align with the
broader business goals you have specified in the Business Plan.
▪ Three strategies to ensure that the strategic objectives are reached (one strategy for each strategic
objective). For each you must ensure that they:
− Has been assigned a priority (High, Medium, Low)
− Has been assigned action steps to ensure that the strategic goal is reached. These are the
individual steps that must be completed to achieve the strategy.
− Has as assigned responsibility for the action steps
− Has an assigned date when the strategy is to be finalised
− Has specified a measurable performance indicator to determine success (or failure)
You should assign responsibility based on the redeveloped Org Chart in the Business Plan. These
strategic goals can be anything, but they must lead to growth, be achievable, and be inline with the
organisations business goals, mission, vision, and core values. Another important aspect for the
strategic objectives is the positive impression of the media and community.

To: You

From: Gavin Stead (gavin.stead@cbsa.com.au)

Date/time: Friday 9:01AM

Subject: Maintaining Team Enthusiasm

To You,

Now that the Change Management Plan and strategic strategies are being implemented and all employees
are working flat out, I think it would be a good time to try and raise morale a bit.
I would like you to lead a brainstorming session with representatives from each department. The purpose of
this session is to try and create and maintain a positive work environment by brainstorming ways that the
organisation can encourage work teams and individual employees to develop innovative approaches to the
performance of work. I’m hoping that the employees can come up with some great ideas that can be further
explored.

Kind Regards,

Gavin Stead

300 Fictional Way, Sydney, NSW 2000
Phone: 1800 111 222
www.cbsa.com.au

TASK

the brainstorming session so that you can show leadership skills. Your objective is to generate ideas for how
CBSA can:
▪ Create and maintain a positive work environment
▪ Encourage teams and individuals to develop innovative approaches to the performance of work
You should pose questions to the attendees on the two issues above. You should actively try to get all
attendees involved in the generating of ideas around these two issues.

During the brainstorming session, your assessor will be looking to see that you can:
▪ Participate in a variety of spoken exchanges with co-workers using structure and language appropriate to
context and audience
▪ Demonstrate sophisticated control over oral, visual and/or written formats, drawing on a range of
communication practices to achieve goals

To begin this part, read the following email and then complete the tasks that follow:

To: You

From: Gavin Stead (gavin.stead@cbsa.com.au)

Date/time: Friday 9:01AM

Subject: Maintaining Team Enthusiasm

To You,

It has come to my attention that a number of incidents have been occurring over the last few months while
the changes are being implemented. This includes incidents from members from IT, Sales and Marketing and
other departments. These incidents include:
1. Staff members being resistant of changes, as previous changes have not gone to plan
2. Staff members not sticking to policies, procedures, and plans and just making it up as they go
3. Staff members displaying a winning at all costs mentality (each employee only looks out for themselves)
I want you to investigate each of the above and think of ways that each can be resolved. I would then like you
to deliver a presentation which explains:
▪ What business ethics are and why they are important
▪ CBSA’s Code of Ethics
▪ The importance of role modelling ethical conduct to fellow employees
▪ Methods for resolving each of the three incidents given earlier

Kind Regards,

address incidents that have occurred and to ensure that every employee is aware of ethics in business. You

▪ What business ethics are and why they are important
▪ CBSA’s Code of Ethics (accessible via the CBSA website)
▪ The importance of role modelling ethical conduct to fellow employees
