STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

September 23, 2020

To,

Dear Sir/Madam,

I believe that I’m a highly motivated, hardworking, and task-oriented individual. I like to think of myself
as a person who has a high level of a growth mindset. To me, learning is a never-ending process. Hence,
I want to pursue a master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. In my country, there is an extreme
shortage of electricity despite having rich natural resources. There is a minimum of 4 to 6 hours daily
rolling blackout in every region, which not only affects the lives of people but also the economy of the
country. I aspire to successfully run a company that not only focuses on generating sufficient 100
percent environment-friendly electricity with minimum losses as possible but also on reducing electric
consumption while advancing product design. In the past, I have worked with Master Wind Energy
Limited, whose goal is to produce 100 percent pollution-free electricity in remote areas where there is
an excessive deficiency of electricity that interweaves with my aim as well.

I have completed my matriculation and intermediate from Riyadh, KSA, in 2013 and, 2015 respectively.
Then I came to Pakistan and completed my degree in Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering
from the University of Engineering and Technology Lahore, Pakistan, in 2019. I obtained an IELTS score
of 7.5 bands this year. Academically, in high school, my extracurricular activities include participation in
various quiz bee competitions. In addition, I played as a midfielder in the local soccer club in high school
and was also a member of the campus soccer team while in the university. Soccer has taught me an
important lesson in life, that is, 'teamwork’, which helps me a lot both in my studies and daily personal
life. On top of being active in sports, I was appointed as General Secretary of the American Society of
Mechanical Engineers on my campus where I have organized multiple academic events. This learning
and social experience have effectively improved my communication and management skills.
From the beginning, I have always been interested in studying engineering. Despite my family, who
wanted me to go for a healthcare career, I chose mechanical engineering. I am always excelled in Physics
and Mathematics and intrigued by how Mathematics applied in Physics and Engineering. I am always
fascinated by machine shapes and their functions, may it be a simple wheel or a complex turbine. I am
very observant and curious about how things work. For example, I tend to ask myself why someone
fabricated a product or a machine in a specific pattern or if it could still improve somehow, and if yes,
then how? My curiosity about design always keeps me thinking.

In my first year in the university, I was thrilled about the course subject 'Engineering Graphics,' where I
learned about basic hand sketches and other terminologies related to it. After that, I studied 'Machine
Design and CAD,' which further captured my interest in engineering. I was amazed by how various
mathematical techniques are applied to solve engineering problems. For example, when studying the
course 'Introduction to Computational Fluid Dynamics', I learned how physics, calculus, and different
numerical methods are implementing to solve a fluid problem. It was when I discovered to solve
complicated and lengthy Fluid Mechanics problems with accuracy using simulation software.

During my final year at the university, I led a group project on the 'Design of Heating Ventilation and Air
Conditioning HVAC' for the Biomedical Engineering Department Building of the campus. The building
consists of two floors with an area of 37,252 square feet. The main objective was to calculate the
heating and cooling load of the built building and make alterations regarding its orientation, design,
material usage, and interior to reduce heating and cooling load. After a challenging research period,
industrial visits, and professional HVAC engineers' support, we managed to reduce 37.3 tons of
refrigeration (TR) of the cooling load and 10.1 tons of refrigeration TR of the heating load. It was a
tremendous achievement for us, and we got recognition from our professors as well as other
professionals in the field.

After completing my bachelor's degree, my interest has developed to pursue a career in mechanical
design and finite element analysis. To strengthen and enhance my understanding of these fields, I
completed multiple online courses about mechanical design and finite element analysis on the EDX
platform. After that, I have been working as a freelancer in the design and analysis field. I have worked
on more than 20 different projects, from designing and analyzing (Computational Fluid Dynamics)
vertical axis wind turbine to working on the design of new products. To this day, I am one of the best
sellers in the platform with 100 percent positive feedbacks, but I know that I have a good deal to learn
theoretically as well as practically.

My interest in these fields intensified while working at Master Wind Energy, Limited, in Pakistan, as a
trainee engineer. I worked with my project team for 2-month for the design and manufacturing of
Savonius Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (SHAWT). Our main objectives were to control the rotational
speed of the Savounius turbine to prevent it from failure due to high-speed wind and, to increase its
rotational speed when there is low wind speed to increase the efficiency by modifying the design. Not
only I worked on the 3D CAD model of the turbine, but I also performed simulation on software. After a
positive outcome from fluid simulation, our team started manufacturing SHAWT. As a result, our final
model 550 rpm, without any severe vibration at 7 percent high wind velocity compared to the
conventional Savounius horizontal wind turbine model. There was also a notable increase in rpm of our
modified model of Savonius turbine at low air velocity compared to the conventional Savounius
horizontal wind turbine.

I am highly motivated to pursue a master's degree in Mechanical Engineering in Canada, so I can

accomplish my dream of running my company to overcome the electricity shortage through gained
knowledge and work experience. From many hours of research and counseling from professors,
professionals, and friends, I came to this conclusion that Canada is the best option for me to study
Masters in Mechanical Engineering. I aspire to study in Canada not only because of its well-known
engineering universities and highly advance industries but also because of the high quality of living
compared to other countries. Living and working in Canada will certainly, advance my career growth and
future professional life.

I have chosen the University of Concordia as it is one of the top reputable educational institutions in
Canada for engineering and technology. Its laboratories and research centers will be a stepping stone for
me to develop my skills and enhance my ability to solve complex technological problems in industries.
Moreover, the level of diversity among students as well as faculty is also an attractive feature of the
university. I aim to attain sound professional expertise in a field that most relevant to my interests. I am
fully aware of the fact that pursuing this course requires a high level of intelligence, dedication, and
immense sacrifice. I am fully confident that I can contribute positively towards the university, and
hopefully also to Canada.
Looking forward for a positive response.
Respectfully,
Faaiz Amin Qazi
