1. A voltage v(t) = 141.4 sin (314t +10°) is applied to a circuit and a steady current given by
i (t) =14.14 sin (314t -20°) is found to flow through it. Determine
(i)the p.f. of the circuit(ii)the power delivered to the circuit Ans. (i)0.866 (ii) 865.74W

2. A coil connected to a 250 V, 50 Hz sinusoidal supply takes a current of 10A at a phase


angle of 30°. Calculate the resistance and inductance of coil and also power taken by the coil
Ans. (i) 21.65 ohm (ii) 0.039 H (iii) 2165 W

3. A choke coil connected across a 250 V, 50 Hz supply takes a current of 10 A at


0.8 pf. lag. What will be the power taken by the choke when connected across a 220 V,
25 Hz supply? Ans. 2121.8 W

4. A current of 5A flows through a noninductive resistance in series with a choking


coil when supplied at 250V, 50 Hz. If voltage across the resistance is 125 V and across
the coil, 200V, Calculate :
(i) impedance, reactance and resistance of the coil Ans. 40 ohm, 39.62 ohm, 5.5 ohm
(ii) power absorbed by the coil 137.5 W
(iii) total power 762.5 W

5. A series R-L-C circuit consists of R = 10, L= 0.318 H, C = 63.6 F and emf source e(t) =
100 sin 314t. Calculate :-
i) Expression for i(t) i(t) = 1.97 sin (314t-78.64)
ii) Phase angle between voltage and current 78.64 degree
iii) Power factor 0.197
iv)Active power consumed 19.4W

6. A series circuit having a resistance of 10 , an inductance of 0.025H and a variable


capacitance is connected to a 100 V, 25 Hz single phase supply, the current drawn being 8 A.
Calculate:-
(i) Capacitance (ii) Impedance (iii) power factor (iv) power consumed
Ans. (i) 560 microfarad (ii) 12.5 ohm (iii) 0.8 (iv) 640 W

7.Find the value of an inductance which should be connected in series with a capacitor of 5μF, a
resistance of 10Ω and an ac source of 50 Hz so that power factor of the circuit is unity.
Ans. 2.03 H

8. Compute the powers in each element of the circuit shown

Ans. Power in 5 ohm=575.66 W, Power in capacitor=0, Power in R-L branch=1036.03 W


9. A series connected circuit has R=4 ohm and L=25 mH,

(a) Calculate the value of C that will produce a quality factor of 50. Ans. C=0.625 microfarad

(b) Find half power frequencies and bandwidth. Ans.7920,8080 rad/sec and 160 rad/sec

(c) Determine the average power dissipated at resonant frequency and half power frequency
points. Ans. 1.25 KW and 0.625 KW

10. A resistor and a capacitor are in series with a variable inductor. When the circuit is connected
to 200V, 50 Hz supply the maximum current obtained by varying the inductance is 0.314 A.
The voltage across capacitor, when the circuit current is maximum, is 800V. Find the values
of series circuit elements. Ans. R=636.95 ohm, L=8.1 H, C=1.25 microfarad.

11. A coil is connected in series with a variable capacitor C. The supply voltage is 10 V at
1000rad/sec. The current in the circuit is maximum when C=10 microfarad. The current is
0.707 times the maximum current when C=12.5 microfarad. Find

(i) Inductance and resistance of the coil. Ans. L=0.1 H, R=20 ohm
(ii) Q of the coil at 1000rad/sec. Q=5
(iii) maximum current in the circuit. 0.5 amp.

12. Three sinusoidal voltages acting in series are given by :


v1= 10 sin 440 t
v2= 10√2 sin (440t-45°)
v3= 20 cos 440t
Determine :
(i) an expression for the resultant voltage. Ans. v=22.36 sin(440t+26.56)
(ii) the frequency and rms value of the resultant voltage. 70Hz, 15.81 V
