CHAPTER IV

FINDING AND DISCUSSION

A. Findings

Based on data analysis online English teaching and learning during the

covid-19 pandemic at SMP 4 Ampek Nagari, this research was focused on teacher’s

preparation, teacher’s teaching and learning activities, and online platforms, The

following were the findings of the research.

1. Preparation for English online teaching and learning at SMP N 4 Ampek


Nagari

Based on the results of data analysis of interview research, it was found that

three English teachers at SMP 4 Ampek Nagari did the teaching preparations before

teaching teachers prepared learning tools, namely: lesson plans, teaching materials,

learning materials, and media. It is supported by the data interviews dan

documentation from English teachers.

I prepared lesson plans, teaching materials, learning


materials, and media before teaching. I usually used
WhatsApp platform for online learning flatforms.

The teachers before to teaching English preparation the first teachers prepare

lesson plan in the lesson plan teacher explain to material learning, learning activities

and purpose learning to students of the used whatsapp application. Second teachers

give to learning material send to whatsApp group and teachers explain learning

material of photos, video and voice notes in the whatsApp group.


2. Teaching Activity English Online Learning at SMP N 4 Ampek Nagari

Based on the results data analysis of interview research, it was found that

three English teachers at SMP 4 Ampek Nagari, On the online teaching and learning

activities process the teacher carries out a process of learning activities, it was named

introduction, core activity and closing.

In the process of teaching and learning activities there are several


obstacles faced by teachers, due to online learning there are many
students who are less active and only take attendance list in the
learning process. Then they are also had a problem with their network
connection.

Teaching and learning process activities are carried out by opening


greetings, being absent and then reviewing the past material before
entering the new material, after that the teacher gives new material to
students.

The teaching activity English online learning teacher did the introduction,

core activity and closing the following:

Introduction The teachers used whatsapp application,

the first teachers started the online class

with greetings in Arabic, and then the

teacher check attendance list and after

that the teachers gave some motivation to

students before shared the materials.

After the teachers gave some motivation

the teachers always asked students about


the previous materials.
Core activities The teacher shared the materials in

whatsapp group trough the feature

whatsapp namely: photos, document,

video, and voice note, and the teacher

gave instruction to students to open their

English textbooks. Teacher explain the

material and some students asked the

teacher about the materials.

After teachers gave materials, the

teachers also gave assignment to students

and gave score to students assignment.


Closing The teachers concluded the discussion

learning material, and evaluation to finish

learning material.

Method of learning online

The learning method used by the teacher at SMPN 4 Ampek Nagari is the

same as conventional learning with the lecture method, in the current condition the

teacher uses the WhatsApp application for online media learning, the teacher uses the

lecture method with WhatsApp application features such as voice notes to process

teaching and learning activities.


The method used has the teacher is used WhatsApp application and
lectures. Considering that the teacher adjusts to the situation at the
time of covid-19, the learning method must use media or applications
for online learning.

Communication teachers and students on online English teaching and learning

In the process of teaching and learning teachers and students must

communicate so that when the teacher explains the material to students there is

feedback, but in the current covid-19 situation the interaction between teachers and

students is different because the learning process is not face-to-face.

Communication between teachers and students during the learning


process using whatsapp groups, from these results the researchers
concluded that at this time of covid-19 the communication between
students and teachers was very student because learning that was not
face-to-face became an obstacle for teachers in teaching, using the
whatsapp application sometimes there were students who were not
included in the group to follow the learning.

3. Assessment English Online Teaching and Learning at SMPN 4 Ampek

Nagari

Based on the results data analysis of interview research, it was found that

three English teachers at SMP 4 Ampek Nagari, giving assignments in online English

learning the teacher gives assignments in the whatsapp group by using the features in

the whatsapp application such as voice notes, videos, photos, documents.

Assignment of students online went smoothly, only responses from


students were lacking when assignments were given, and also schools
and teachers used 2 methods for learning, namely online and offline.
Online where students use WhatsApp to study, the provision of
material and student assignments only sends to the teacher's personal
whatapp and offline students come to school using health protocols to
pick up materials and deliver assignments according to the specified
schedule.

The assignment is given after the teacher has finished explaining the learning

material, the task given by the teacher can be through photos sent to the whatsapp

group then students make the assignment and send it again via the teacher's personal

whatsapp or to the whatsapp group. In addition to using the online system at SMP 4

Ampek Nagari, they also use an offline system, this offline system is also used to

make it easier for students who do not have hand phones and also limited internet

networks that do not support where they live. offline students have to go to school to

deliver assignments and pick up assignments according to the schedule determined by

the school, because students are still in a COVID-19 pandemic condition, students

must comply with health protocols to come to school.

4. Teachers using Online Platform Teaching and Learning at SMPN 4

Ampek Nagari

Based on the results data analysis of interview research, it was found that

three English teachers at SMP 4 Ampek Nagari, the online teaching and learning

process during the covid-19 pandemic at SMPN 4 Ampek Nagari, the teacher mostly

online platform the used this whatsApp application

The teachers in SMP 4 Ampek Nagari used application teaching and


learning English this whatsappp, because the application to easy
understand used teachers and students. The WhatsApp application that
is familiar to students is also affordable by the internet network where
students live and the limited number of students who have hand
phones.

The school also provides suggestions for using other applications such
as Google Classroom, but it has not been effective because many
students and teachers do not understand this application, for school
uniformity using the WhatsApp application.

The media used by the teacher for online learning is the WhatsApp
application because the application is easy to understand by students
and skills must be included in the WhatsApp application, the teacher
explains learning materials related to the 4 English skills, such as
reading, listening, writing, and speaking, the obstacles faced by the
teacher when teaching these 4 skills, namely the pronunciation of
students who are difficult due to the ineffectiveness of learning online
with this WhatsApp media.

Online English teaching and learning at SMPN 4 Ampek Nagari, teacher use

whatsapp application to media online learning English of to whatsapp group teachers

send to material learning to student for example teachers explain material greeting

card and teacher send to same card in whatsapp. When the teacher explains the

English learning material, the teacher finds difficulties in students, sometimes

students do not respond to what the teacher asks during learning activities. Then the

teacher also found that there were students who were not connected by the internet

network because the students' residences were far from the reach of the internet, so

online learning through the WhatsApp application was not effective.

Online English learning the teacher explains four skills in whatsapp group this

writing, listening, reading and speaking. The teacher must enter these four skills.

During this online learning, the teacher also found a problem that was found, namely

the students' English pronunciation which was still not fluent. For example, the
teacher sends an English sentence in the WhatsApp group after the teacher conveys

with a voice note the students are asked to repeat the sentence again, from the results

the researchers found there were student some who could not pronounce the English

sentence

The teacher provides subject matter to students by sending photos, videos of

teaching materials and explaining them in the whats app group, but students

receive lessons when online are less effective so many students are not active

when learning online.

B. Discussion

Online English teaching and learning at SMP 4 Ampek Nagari, the teacher

should the preparation of teaching and learning English during pandemic COVID-

19, Teaching and learning activities during the COVID-19 pandemic changed

radically, The teachers revealed that learning tools such as the syllabus and lesson

plans were adjusted to what had been suggested by the government, the ministry

of education and culture, the teacher delivered learning materials according to the

timeframe or at the time of covid-19. According to Brown (2015), explains the

syllabus as a study used in implementing certain language programs.

Characteristics in the curriculum include subject matter, language goals,

sequencing and materials to meet the needs of certain students in certain contexts.

Teachers teach English material during covid-19 not all material is taught in full

because learning is currently online.

Teaching activity online English learning at SMPN 4 Ampek Nagari, online

teaching and learning activities the teacher provides learning materials through
whatsapp groups and learning activities begin with an introduction, core activity

and closing. The teachers use method lecture of online English teaching and

learning.

Teachers use different learning methods from face-to-face learning, online

teachers use the whatsapp application for the teaching and learning process,

online learning students and teachers must have an internet network. The

communication between students and teachers was very student because learning

that was not face-to-face became an obstacle for teachers in teaching, using the

whatsapp application sometimes there were students who were not included in the

group to follow the learning.

In addition, teachers also use task-based learning methods. Giving

assignments to students is the main focus of learning that the teacher will use as

proof of attendance and assessment. According to Harmer (2002), that task-based

learning is a language learning method that uses tasks as the main focus of

learning. In this learning, students are asked to do assignments, and the teacher

discusses, corrects, and assesses the assignment.

The response of students in the online learning process of English at SMP 4

Ampek Nagari is very low or the effectiveness of online learning is very low, so

the teacher must give encouragement and motivation to students so that during the

learning and teaching process students do not feel bored in the WhatsApp group.

Teachers and students at SMP 4 Ampek Nagari use smart phones for teaching

and learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. Teachers used application

WhatsApp to teaching and learning online. According to Michael (2013), that


online learning is structured learning with the aim of using an electronic or

computer system so that it can support a learning process.

In conclusion, online English teaching and learning at junior high school 4

Ampek Nagari during pandemic covid-19 while the beginning of face-to-face

learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, English teaching and learning were

carried out online, the teacher used two methods in teaching and learning English,

namely online and offline. online learning teachers and students use facilities such

as hand phones, internet quota and application media used by teachers for

teaching and learning English is whatsapp, then offline the teacher will provide

learning materials and assignments in the form of photocopies so that students

come to school to pick up materials and assignments later photocopied again.
