1.1 Background
A charge controller is a device that is used to safely charge the battery or energy
storage system used in a solar photovoltaic system. It is also a safe path for discharge of
energy (DC) from the storage or battery. It protects the battery from being over charged
and discharged. Currently most charge controllers or regulators operate to control
charging and discharging by automatically cutting off supply to and from the battery (i.e.
overcharging limit and over discharging limit). They exist in two types i.e. Pulse wave
modulation – PWM (common type and cheap) and Maximum power point tracking –
MPPT (rear, efficient and expensive).
Besides these parameters, they still lack another vital parameter of alerting the
user during moments of discharge when the system is nearing lower cutoff limit (i.e. over
discharge cut-off limit).
Therefore, this project is about designing a charge controller that will alert the
user when the system nears or reaches over discharge limit and automatically disconnects
the load output.
(Background should be at least four pages add more work)
Off-grid solar systems that deploy use of charge controllers don’t have an alert
system that warns the user as regards the nearing cutoff and actual cutoff discharge
limit/point. In addition, most of the chargers lack onboard battery level monitors, which
often forces the user to purchase a battery monitor separately. As a result, lack of an alert
system, it will always require the user to inspect or keep an eye on the controller or risk
being taken by surprise when the system reaches power disconnect limit.
This system ensures that the user is notified instantly when their system is about to
disconnect so that they are able to take action when necessary to disconnect their DC
loadings accordingly. This significance of this mechanism is that it;
Allows users to take action instantly
Makes users maximize efficiently so that the system can meet its lifespan
Protect the battery from overloading.
Encourages users to adhere to energy efficiency and energy saving thus making them
understand and know their system better.
The main objective of this study is to design a charging and load protection solar
system.
This device is suitable for applicable in off-grid Direct Current – DC solar systems

The power supply constitutes of the solar power (extracted from the solar panel)
as the main (primary) source of power for charging the battery and powering the load
under normal conditions. The battery as well takes over as the secondary source of power
in the absence of the solar power.
The two SPDT relays (RL1 and RL2) and potentiometers (VR2 and VR3) in the
circuit are used for setting the upper cutoff (over charge) and lower cutoff (over
discharge) limits. The voltage regulator (RG1) and other components in the circuit are
used to supply a constant power supply the required to operate the relays, transistors, and
other electronic components in the network.
This block consists mainly of the 555Timer IC chip and the buzzer. The timer is
used to determine the timing of the buzzer connected to its output pin 3. This alarm is
triggered whenever the battery voltage is nearing the maximum discharge and cutoff limit
as determined in the control circuit block. The alert system is deactivated once the battery
voltage goes above the over discharge point. The resistors and capacitors, and other
components are used to attain safe operation mode of the electronic components.
