Instruction/s: Answer each of the following questions in 3 to 5 sentences.

1. Challenges in communication in multicultural settings abound. How are you


going to deal with those challenges? What communication strategies are you
going to employ?

I should know what things I must consider first before starting a


conversation or start to communicate with someone who I think have a
different view from me. Restriction is the communication strategy that may
employ in all aspect of multicultural settings because it confines me as a
speaker and limit the words that I must say. In restriction, I could respect the
culture of the one I’m talking to by limiting on my words. For example, if the
person I’m talking with is very considerate in speaking bad words and I’m the
person who always cussed, I must limit and restrict cussing when I’m talking
with her/him to show consideration.

2. In what way can diverse cultures affect communication? EVALUATE

Diverse culture affect communication by which they may misunderstood


each other when two person are conversing with different culture having
different language, gesture and behavior. It greatly affect the context of the
communication process. In which the context helps establish meaning and
that can influence what is said and how it is said. For example, I am a tourist
in Korea and I’m looking for the famous restaurant that I saw in the drama I
watched, then I saw a local and asked for help. But when I started a
conversation with her, she couldn’t understand English language and the only
thing she understand is the name of the restaurant. She speak to me with
their language but the only thing that I understand with, is her gesture so I just
follow the gesture of her hand that says the direction. The different culture and
language affects the communication.

Instructions: Answer each of the following questions in 3 to 5 sentences or
write 5 to 7- sentence essays.

1. When can you say that the process of communication in a communicative


situation is complete?
I can say that the process of communication in a communicative situation
is complete when the sender and the receiver have the same understanding
for the convey message. It will start in the sender that evaluates his/her ideas
and send the message to the receiver. As the receiver receive the message,
he/she decode the message and give a feedback or response to the sender.
And the communication process is effectively complete when the conversation
stops and both the sender and the receiver are satisfied or contented.

2. How can abiding by the principles of effective communication contribute to


successful communication?
Successful communication may happen in the principles of effective
communication by understanding and considering each one principles to be a
very important aspect or role of communication. It could help give a
successful speech, if the speaker considered the effective communication
principles. For example in a inspirational event, the speaker should consider
the message’s clarity; the concreteness or clear message that the speaker
should relay to the listener; the speaker should show courtesy, by listening on
the audience opinion; and the speaker should consider the correctness in
every aspect such as in time, exact message and correct flow of every speech
given. When the speaker is discussing he/she may consider also to be
creative, captivating and concise to his/her speech to give a visual interest to
the listeners, attract the people’s attention and leave an impact to the listeners
but with the consideration and cultural sensitivity with the audience. Within
these principles that are used in the event, the audience might love and
understand each message the speaker relay. And may contribute to
successful communication.

3. What will happen if the principles of ethical communication are violated?


If the principles of ethical communication are violated, the
communication’s ethic and moral would be affected. Because principles of
ethical communication deals with the behavior of each individual. It
advocates, endorse, strive, promote, condemn, commit and accept ethics in
communication to have an effective and significant communication. If these
are violated, the respect in the communication are being neglect and some
essential morals that a person should have also be lessen.

4. Why is being able to communicate effectively in a globalized world


important?
Due to globalized world many considered the English language as the
international language for us to understand each other even though we have
different culture. In a globalized world, people who possess the ability of an
effective communication across cultures are highly demand to all countries.
Many important transaction are successfully united and build because of the
effective communication of people. For example, in the Philippines because
the Filipinos are considering the English language as official or the second
language, Filipino people become a demand in other countries to work. They
could easily get a job in other countries because they are very hardworking
and also possess effective communication.

5. Give and explain 1 communicative situation in which cultural differences


are not respected.
In a situation between two people who have different beliefs as a Roman
Catholic and a Christian. For example, Melissa and Alisa are classmates,
Melissa is a Christian and Alisa is a Roman Catholic. One night, Alisa invited
Melissa to her apartment, and when they arrived she left Melissa alone in the
living room to cook for their dinner. When Alisa came back, she saw Melissa
sweeping the floor and it make Alisa stop Melissa and get the broom from her
hand. Melissa didn’t know what is the problem, all she know is that she is
helping Alisa to clean her house. And as Alisa saw the confuse face of her
friend, she told Melissa that it is inappropriate to sweep when it is evening
because they believe sweeping in the evening is like you also swept out the
blessing for the people in that house. These two religions conduct and view
differently in beliefs and in norms. In some point, Roman Catholic have many
kinds of belief and somewhat they classified it as an old beliefs that they are
still doing and believe until now. While Christian people only believe on the
doctrine and words in the Bible told by God and not by people so they don’t
know any kinds of belief that a Catholic believe and follow. But both must
respect and know the culture of each other for them to communicate well.

6. Why must the components of an intercultural event be considered when


communicating?
The components of an intercultural event may be considered when
communicating because it would help build a better communication and
relationship. If everyone knows how to respect and recognize each others
culture, it would enhance the view and the trust of people, and can also
eliminate prejudice mindset.The components of an intercultural
communication could improve and develop the person’s capability to reflect or
the thought of putting him/herself to the shoes of other people, to limit or to be
careful in words and other aspect so that no misunderstanding and confusion
will be happened, and lastly, recognize the differences when communicating.

1. In relation to communication, describe the following picture in 3 to 5
sentences.
The picture shows a hand gesture of shaking hands. In some culture,
shaking hands indicates as a greeting, and some it is considered as they have
agreed on something or deal with. For example in china, when they introduce
themselves, they would say their name and hand over their hand to shake
with the person they are introducing with. Also, in businessmen they would
shake hands when both party have agreed on something. But in some
cultures, hand shake is prohibited. For example in Muslim countries, some
women are not allowed to shake hands with men who are not in their family
because they believe that physical contact with the opposite sex is
unnecessary, and disrespectful.
