“REFLECTION PAPER ON PURPOSIVE COMMUNICATION”

In my own understanding, from the word purposive, which is purpose, this is how you
communicate people. This might be in a way of writing or talking to them to deliver the message
that was being conveyed. From its root word "purpose", it means that this provides effective
communication that can be used in various purposes. May it be used in business industry or can
be relayed to a multicultural audiences. Purposive communication guide students in defining and
enhancing their communication skills and develop their confidence in delivering speech. Other
than speaking, it also improves their writing and presenting skills conveying relevant information
needed.
Purposive communication is a form of communication used to write, speak, and present
to different audiences for various purposes. This aims for students to hone their communication
effectively and efficiently to a variety of audiences either local or international to deliver the
intended message. To distinguish communication from other forms of a community like oral
communication and effective communication is to know their definition and usage. Oral
communication is used in daily conversations, casual and informal. It is only limited to verbal
communication and lightened by holes and fillers while purposive communication is designed
for the purpose beyond casual conversation presented daily. It involves intricate study, deep
understanding, and knowledge on specific topics and information they rely on their diverse
listeners. Effective communication, on the other hand, is when both communicators convey their
message and both have understood the information conveyed. This involves not only speaking
but also listening to the speaker to fully grasp the message.
Purposive Communication is a technical term that means a communication that is well
thought out and explained very well, not just thrown out there without thinking about how it is
received and understood. Since, communication should happen with lots of thinking, planning
what to say is essential, one of the examples is when a person gives a speech it is considered as a
purposive communication, for the reason that before a person stands in front of his audience the
words that he will utter are already planned. However, purposive communication does not
happen every time, there are instances that instead of thinking carefully of what to say there are
mishaps where in a person get a lot of things that pop into his head, that is why there are ideas
and concepts which guide a person to achieve purposive communication.
First, is Aristotle’s rhetoric that defines communication as something that taught us that
when a person speaks, there are lots of techniques that he can use to create and share messages in
an artful way to persuade his listeners and in different situation a person chooses small choices
that will make him less persuasive. Its essence to purposive communication is that it enables a
person to use techniques that will make him more comfortable in communicating with other
people, these techniques also help a person assess what to say to share ideas, to instruct, or in
addressing something. As for myself, in class we focus on many skills. One skill which was a
struggle for myself is oral communication, that is why it is important for me to organized my
ideas before sharing them to other people because I do not have enough confidence to blurt out
things without thinking first.
Furthermore, it is inevitable to encounter barriers when communicating, since, there is no
such communication that is free from barriers, as barriers are part of the communication process.
These barriers like the internal and external noises will hinder a purposive communication
because it will distract the speaker in imparting his ideas accurately. Therefore, why are these
barriers identified and classified? They were identified and then classified for people to
overthrow various conflicts and have a purposive communication, without knowing these
barriers, adjusting to a seemingly distracted conversation is unlikely to happen, that is why it is
important to be aware of the barriers of communication.
Next is one of the factors that shapes a communication which is a person’s perception, it
is how a person perceives or see things, every person has different way of understanding things
as people were raised in different environments, beliefs and values. In order to have a purposive
communication between people with contradicting perceptions is to respect each other’s opinion,
to be patient and to be unbiases. Also, nonverbal cues that accompany a person’s words should
be appropriately inclined to what he is saying like gestures, facial expression and more. In
addition, using words with positive connotative meaning is important as well in a purposive
communication because if a person uses negative connotations it might be understood as
something that is offensive and inappropriate. And what purposive communication revolves
about is to think before talking and to choose the right words before speaking. There are also
words that other people would interpret differently, therefore for better communication a person
should construct his sentences clearly without being vague because it can lead to
misunderstanding.
Then in face-to-face communication, people are obliged to be precautionary in their
every actions, since on this type of conversation, people should consider different factors such
as; being mindful on what to say, weighing appropriate words to speak, and also taking into
account the relationship a person had with other people he is talking to. All of these are essential
in a face-to face communication because once a person had uttered a word, he can never take it
back, what has been done could never be undone. And that makes face-to-face a complex
communication. Achieving purposive communication is evident in face-to-face, because a person
is challenge to think carefully before speaking. On the other hand, the opposite of face-to-face is
the online communication that encompasses all forms of communication done through email and
other social networking sites, this kind of communication poses pros and cons. The advantage is,
it is time and energy efficient, however, it’s downside is, it erases the essence of talking face-to-
face and a person would find it hard to sympathize with other people and feel their emotions
through online.
When a person is the speaker there are lots of things to consider that were mentioned
earlier and when a person is the listener there are also things to be mindful with, just like; giving
verbal and nonverbal feedback while listening to show that you are interested to what the speaker
is talking about, also listening for the big picture, keeping the conversation on the them, taking
concise talking turns and taking action follow up. If there are factors to be considered when
listening, there are are also barriers to effective listening and there are; distractions,
preoccupation, too focused on the details, the topic is boring or offensive, rebuttal tendency and
when the speaker is the problem.
Lastly is the tone of voice, an important factor when a person talks, since, it is a
nonverbal cue that accompanies a person’s words and reflects meaning. Tone plays an essential
role in making up an effective communication that is why a person should have a good tone to
impart a message clearly and to uphold the essence of purposive communication where messages
that a person have conveyed were results of thinking and planning. If ever a person has a bad and
offensive tone, he can change that gradually by assessing his own mindset and examine his
habits that have influenced have he talks and what tone he uses. In order to develop a good tone,
a person should also develop new mindset and new habits, even if it seems to be hard, everyone
is open for progress and improvement.
Basically, the things that are mentioned above are important to achieve a purposive
communication which mainly promote effective communication with other people, and it is more
than just plainly communicating with other people with a purpose. It is somehow a totality of the
different ways of communicating that includes, writing, speaking and presenting to different
audiences.
In this subject, I have also learned well on various approaches of communication. In fact,
we were also introduced on the communication in the workplace such as those professionals
teacher in the school on how they communication with their students or learners. Let us include
the teachers. Teachers are considered to be the busiest and also one of the most important
personnel at the school. Their duties are more on the emphasis on how they approach and make a
good connection with their learners. With this, there are techniques and methods that they are
applying in attaining better communication and understanding towards their learners. We all take
in mind that the concept of communication with this profession is very essential because this also
contributes to the factors of learning.
I have also known the different tips in writing a news which includes, deciding what type
of news would be the approach of the information, learn and know the 5-W’s and 1-H to
determine clearly what the data is trying to portray, keeping the news format clean and simple so
that readers and listeners are able to remember these information, proper usage of exclamation
point to look formal since it is considered news, the usage of exclamation mark should be
monitored, always use third person point of view, give emphasis on the importance of headline
because this is the portion in which it catches its own reader and lastly, always keep in mind
checking and proofreading the whole article to make it more decent and presentable.
Also, this lesson taught me on how to prepare myself on how to make my life stable in
the near future. making resumes and application is one of the things that we must study with
because this is very essential in finding a stable job that will sustain my needs and wants in the
future. As we consider job as very necessary in a life of an individual, we should also consider
these letters (resume and application letter) to get in a place we wanted to work with and get
justifiable amount of earnings. I would find this very interesting and beneficial for me since the
main objective of studying in college is to set and prepare ourselves in attaining our goals and
futures in life. This subject made us prepared in situations like this. Introducing this kind of
matter in first year students are a great advantage for us. As we already know the importance of
these letter, let us now scrutinize their characteristics and how the two is different from each
other. The resume or curriculum vitae serves as a summary of the applicant’s achievements,
qualifications, and basic personal data. The data being presented here must be well organized to
the point that the sequel of each categories are uniform. Since resumes serves just a summary of
the achievements and milestones of the applicant, this must be concise and straight to the point.
The application letter tends to serve as a persuasive letter to the employer. In this letter, it is
mostly accompanied by feelings and real emotions to “sell” yourself to the company. This letter
is also supplemented by the resume and we should also keep in our mind that the application
letter is always be positioned at the front (top) before the resume.
As a student the relevance of purposive communication among students is that it gives
the student the avenue to learn and improve their communication skills in interacting on a daily
basis since not everyone is efficient and effective enough in communicating. Personally, as a
student myself, improving and enhancing communication skills is a very must that we should
take in account, it helps us to be more confident in engaging activities. Thus, learning to
communicate well helps individuals to be prepare in building their careers in the future. As a
student, its relevance is it enables myself to communicate in a manner for which my information
is intended. For instance, I am able to communicate and connect with my fellow students that
made our bond stronger and our relationship better. To my teachers as well, I am able to
communicate what I wanted to deliver in a respectful manner and it helped me grow as a student
from which it is a great foundation as I become a professional in the near future. That being said,
having such foundation is very much useful as a professional since I will be dealing with
different people and audience. Each and every one of us has a different career path to take so we
should learn and know how to face different circumstances by communicating properly and
effectively.
As a student, through purposive communication we can be able to know and understand
the message that the sender (which is the teacher) wanted to relay to the receiver (the student)
from the lessons that was being conducted. Through this it helps to communicate well to the
sender. As a student, we have to connect and make relationship with each other across different
courses. Purposive communication helps us to be able to communicate effectively. During
discussion, it will also help us to listen, understand and convey with our own understanding of
the context. On the other hand, it is very important to professionals as they going to interact and
communicate with a variety of audiences. It will help them develop the communicative
competence that would help them to communicate effectively. Downloaded by Majid Talib
(majid.talib@deped.gov.ph) lOMoARcPSD|20758581 As a student, it is important to have a
proper training in speaking, writing, and presenting to different audiences for various purposes.
It’s relevant for future reasons, most specially when facing important people in a formal event. In
this way the student will be ready for future work related. As a student, purposive
communication is relevant as we embark on research studies, thesis, case studies, and other
academic papers that present information and data for the intended receiver. This will also
prepare students to be effective communicators in their chosen fields as they will be trained how
to present themselves to their respective audiences. Purposive communication has always been
an important part in our student life. In writing an essay or reporting a particular topic, we are
guided by the essence of purposive communication to investigate the audience and eliminate
unnecessary information by only focusing on the purpose of such activity. Moreover, when we
are working in a group, we always make sure to consider our group mates whenever we try to
suggest something or share our ideas to the group because we keep in mind that our main
purpose why we communicate with one another is to accomplish successfully our group task.
