JAISALMER BUSINESS & ECONOMY : AN OVERVIEW


During 1955-56, the Indian Government started divisional geographic expedition for petroleum in
the Jaisalmer district. A voluminous source of Natural Gas was found by Oil India Limited in the
Jaisalmer plateau in 1988.The culture of the city largely contributes to the tourism industry of it.
The city is home to some of the popular singers and dancers who visited various countries in the
world. Singers from Manganyar have charmed the world. Queen Harish, one of the famous
performers of the state, was on a world trip in 2010 and has performed in many foreign movies.

The city is famous for its leather industry. The messenger bags made of wild camel leather are quite
popular. These camels are indigenous creatures of the territory. Jaisalmer business and economy
relies on the industries and businesses of the district to a significant degree. Currently, the major
industries in Jaisalmer district are as follows:

 Travel and tourism


 Mineral-oriented industry
 Khadi industry

TRAVEL & TOURISM:


Tourism industry of Jaisalmer is one of the booming sectors of the city. The city earns most of its
revenue from the department of tourism. The city contributes heavily to the state coffer drawing
from tourism in Jaisalmer. The natural beauty of the city set amidst the desert lures international and
national tourists to visit it. The city earns foreign exchange from the huge number of international
tourists who flock the city every year.

The government of the state of Rajasthan has provided with adequate infrastructure to support
tourism industry of Jaisalmer. Accommodation facilities are available in various hotels established
in the city. The city is also well connected roads, railways and air to the major cities of the country.
The scenic beauty of the city lures tourists to visit it. The industry of tourism in Jaisalmer has
emerged as one of the most profiting industries of the region.
The tourism industry of the city has flourished due to the following tourist attractions:

BARMER BUSINESS & ECONOMY: AN OVERVIEW


In 2016 the Ministry of Panchayati Raj named Barmer one of the country's 250 most backward
districts (out of a total of 640). It is one of the twelve districts in Rajasthan currently receiving funds
from the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme. Barmer district is part of the Great Indian
Desert or Thar Desert. Like all other districts in the desert region, Barmer is known for its folk
music and dance. The Bhopas (priest singers) are found in Barmer, who composes music in honour
of the deities of the region and its war heroes. The other folk musicians come from a community
called the Muslim Dholis (drummers) for most of whom this is the only means of
livelihood. Langas and Manganiars are the some of these communities. People speak mostly
the Rajasthani Language, while Hindi is the official language here. Scheduled Castes and Scheduled
Tribes make up 16.8% and 6.8% of the population respectively.

Barmer is known for its carved wooden furniture and hand block printing industry.

Mallinath cattle fair - It takes place every year during month of April. The fair takes place
in Tilwara, an area also known for archaeological discoveries, and goes on for two weeks. This fair
is one of the biggest cattle fair of India.

Once known as "kala pani where government employees were sent on punishment postings because
of its desert, water problems, and border area. In 2009, the Barmer district came into the news due
to its large Oil basin. The British exploration company Cairn Energy is going to start the production
soon in the year 2009 on the large scale. Mangala, Bhagyam and Aishwariya are the major oil fields
in the district. This is India's biggest oil discovery in 22 years. Cairn works in partnership with state
owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC). Cairn holds 70% in the field, while state-run
ONGC holds the remaining 30%. In March 2010, Cairn increased oil potential from this field to 6.5
billion barrels of oil – from an earlier estimate of 4 billion barrels.

BARMER REFINERIES:
Barmer Refinery is an upcoming public sector refinery and petrochemical complex in the Pachpadra
near Balotra in Barmer district of Rajasthan, India. It is jointly owned by Hindustan Petroleum
Corporation Limited and the Government of Rajasthan. This refinery will be connected with
Jamnagar Refinery and Bathinda Refinery through Amritsar Jamnagar Expressway. Barmar refinery
will be second largest crude oil reserve for India.

CONSTRUCTION & CAPACITY:


The foundation stones of the project were laid on 22 September 2013 by then Indian National
Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

The projects kick-started only after the Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the works on 16
January 2018. The project is planned to be completed by 2022-23.

The project has planned capacity of 9 million tonne per year of refining capacity and 2 million tonne
per year of petrochemical complex capacity. It will be spread across 4400.40 acres of land.The 50
percentage work of refinery had completed.[4]The facility will have 29 process units, such as a 9
MMTPA[clarification needed] crude distillation unit, 4.8 MMTPA vacuum distillation unit, 1.8
MMTPA naphtha hydrotreating unit, a diesel hydrotreatment unit at 4.1 MMTPA, a delayed coker
unit with capacity 2.4 MMTPA, vacuum gas oil treatment hydrotreater with a capacity of 3.5
MMTPA and a petro-fluidised catalytic cracking unit of 2.9 MMTPA. Other units include an
isomerisation unit, a dual-feed cracker unit, an ethylene recovery unit, two polyethylene units and
two polypropylene units. The polypropylene units will use Lummus' Novolen process reactors and
Novolen high performance catalyst.

FUNCTION AND OUTCOME:


Barmer Refinery is owned by a joint venture between Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited
(owning 74% stakes) and the Government of Rajasthan (owning 26% stakes). In January 2019, the
project was announced to be worth ₹43,129 crore (US$5.7 billion). Around 66% of the finances
(worth ₹28,753 crore (US$3.8 billion)) would be arranged through loan from joint consortium of
lenders; State Bank of India being prime lender with over 50% contribution.[6]

Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited managing director M. K. Surana said the project would
employ 40,000 people directly and 60,000 people indirectly.[8] More employment will be given to
local people.[4]

Rajasthan State Industrial Development and Investment Corporation will invest ₹1 lakh core in
Barmar Refinery.
