Running Head: BLOCKCHAIN IMPLEMENTATION

Blockchain Implementation

BLOCKCHAIN IMPLEMENTATION 2

Blockchain is referred to as an electronic ledger used among disparate users and ensures

that any records made in the ledger are unchangeable and linked to the previous one. The name

blockchain is derived from the functioning of the system where once a new transaction is added

the data creates a new block. This kind of technology is used in several contexts among them

being education and military. In the education sector, the users ensure that all the data records are

kept safe as they contain student’s information as well as the institution’s records such as

financial documents. “Education makes use of both the public and private blockchain where

information can be exchanged among the parties as well as involving administrators who allow

organizations to create their transaction networks” (Pilkington 2016). This essay discusses how

blockchain implementation can improve data security in education.

One way in which blockchain can be used is through ensuring secure parent-school

communication. Most of the institutions have adopted online communication between parents

and the management where the parent’s physical appearance is not needed. Due to the tight

programs that individuals have, almost all the information is passed via SMS or E-mails

disclosing all the intended details. However, there is a high risk in this form of communication

where hackers can get the information and modify or edit it hence making different meanings to

the recipient. Blockchain technologies ensure that users’ metadata is secure and impenetrable to

hackers.

Additionally, blockchain implementation provides secure cloud storage. Not all learners

get to the institutions to have their lessons but depend on online learning due to some programs.

For instance, some of the scholars are workers who hardly find time to attend lectures. Therefore,

they opt to get their lessons online. This method of learning is however exposed to the danger of

hackers as the data stored in the cloud can be easily accessed and tampered with. With the help

of blockchain, learners and educational professionals store a lot of data in the cloud with an

assurance of protection from the chain. “The tamper-proof ledgers used in the cloud protect data

by providing encryption and ensuring only authorized individuals access the information”

(Almajalid 2017).

The last technique of improving data security is by validating educational degrees.

Learning in an institution is a process that is only completed by acquiring a valid degree. The

process of acquiring the degree is a bit slow and complex hence requiring more time as the

institution has to verify all the information concerning the student. According to Nda&Tasmin

2019, “blockchain technology helps in availing diplomas to students through mobile applications

where such information can be shared with others”. The encryption in the blockchain also

ensures that the certificates cannot be tampered with hence reducing the likelihood of fake

certificates.

In conclusion, blockchain technology is one of the widely used technologies which

provide security to data in different institutions. In the education sector, the students can receive

educational degrees at a convenient time, get access to cloud data that facilitate online learning,

and finally secure the parent-school communication. Additionally, data storage through

blockchain is secured by encryption key and the users are ensured that the information cannot be

accessed by hackers. Lastly, the users of this technology are given time to perform their other

duties if they have access to school information via SMS and emails.
