My responses to the following questions:

What industries or activities in your region are dependent on the climate? Examples may
include farming, outdoor recreation, and tourism.
Which type(s) of severe weather event does the area where you live experience? Examples
include droughts, floods, wildfires, heat waves, extreme cold, and storms. Have you noticed
any change in their frequency or severity recently? Describe.

Question 1:

1. Farming in rural GTA. The Greater Toronto Area relies heavily on the products produced by
farming.

2. Outdoor Recreation: winter sports & activities (hockey, skiing, skating, etc...), summer activities
(swimming in natural bodies of water, parks, outdoor exercise, kids activities such as camp, etc...).

3.Sporting events

4. Oil + gas

5. Coal mining

6. Manufacturing

7.Retail

-The many BIG factory's in GTA causing pollution

Q2:

In the city of Toronto we experience:

-Extreme heat waves

-Extremely cold weather

-Rain storms

-Thunderstorms

Recently we have experienced more extreme heat waves during the summer months. We have also
experienced less snow during the winters. These changes are likely caused by climate change.

11/7/21, 4:43 PM Final Assignment :

According to the model in the video, how are average temperatures in particular regions
around the world expected to change between now and 2100?
Based on the predictions about climate change in the video, what effects might you expect to
observe where you live?

Q1: According to the model, the average temperature could increase by 5 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit
hotter.

Q2: Looking at this evidence, we can predict how climate change will severely affect weather
patterns in Canada by the year 2100. In the summer, Heat waves will probably become much more
severe. In the winter, we may not see much snow.

My responses to the following questions:

In your own words, describe each of the three options laid out in the video and explain how
they are connected.
Describe how various groups in your community might suffer if we choose to not take any
action against climate change. Examples may include homeowners, farmers, business
owners, the elderly, or your classmates.

Question 1:

1. We can ignore the situation and do nothing.

https://lsintspl3.wgbh.org/en-us/lesson/nvdtwm-il-climatefuture/12 2/7
11/7/21, 4:43 PM Final Assignment :

2. We can accept the change, and learn to live in the new environment.

3. We can change our behaviours now, before the damage is irreversible.

The connection between the 3 options is: if we do nothing, the more we will suffer in the future and
therefore, the more we will have to adapt. Whereas, the more we act now to limit the damage, the
less we'll have to adapt to the changes in the future.

Question 2:

The

1, Farmers

The weather will change and be unreliable, which will make it harder to grow crops. This will
perhaps limit the amount of crops they grow. They will make less money, which means it will be
harder to keep up their farm and afford to live.

2. People in poverty

Because of the lack of resources, everything ,especially food and clothing , will cost more to buy.
This means people with less money will be most effected by these price increase.
3. Middle class people

In order to help the people most impacted by climate change, people with more money will have to
share their resources. As a result, they would likely have to pay higher taxes. Also, they're lifestyle
will have to change. For example: gas prices will go up, they wouldn't be able to go on as many
foreign vacations, and other activities will be limited due to changes in the weather.

My responses to the following prompts:

Explain how economics affected the Woodwards’ decisions to adapt to the constant flooding
that they described in the film clip. Is it possible for everyone to do what they did? Why or why
not?
Choose one of the groups that you discussed on Page 4 and suggest adaptation strategies
that might lessen its suffering from the impacts of climate change.

-Because of flooding in the area -- no one will buy their house

-Spent their money on raising their house to protect against floods

-Affects her more than she thought, can't get to work ---- bought car with snorkel

-They encourage for people to come live in the area and see the issue for themselves

Not possible for everyone to do what they did because not everyone has the means / time.

Q2: Farmers

- Start introducing new crops that would be better suited for future weather patterns.

- Farmers could start planning alternative ways to make money. For example: renting out their

property as vacation housing.

My responses to the following questions:

In the video, Kathy Jetñil-Kijiner says asks “What’s going to happen to our culture, our
traditions?” How could climate change cause a community to lose its culture and traditions?
Why would the adaptation strategies like those used in Norfolk not be effective here?

Q1:

-50,000 residents -- very tight-knit community

-They will become a different type of refuge, a "climate refugee".

Essentially, the island residents will not be able to live on their island anymore. This means, that the
community will have to separate, which will make it very difficult to continue to do tradition and
activities

Q2:

The island residents don't have enough money to adapt their house like the people in Norfolk
Virginia. Sea levels are rising much quicker so, they will have to move and not just adapt their
houses.

My responses to the following questions:

Identify the region that has the most potential for generating wind energy in the United States.
Is your community a good place to generate wind energy? Justify your answer by estimating
the potential for wind energy in the region where you live.

A: The central regions and coasts.

B: There is not enough wind in my region to make it high potential for wind energy.

Identify the region that has the most potential for generating solar energy in the United States.
Is your community a good place to generate solar energy? Justify your answer by estimating

11/7/21, 4:43 PM Final Assignment :

A: The south-west regions would generate the most energy. For example: Arizona, New Mexico,
and California.
B: No because we aren't hot all year round so wouldn't be a good region for solar energy. We don't
have the same level of intensity of heat.

Photosynthesis and the Carbon Cycle

Plants take in carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and use it during
photosynthesis to produce and store sugars .

When plants die and decay, the carbon they contain is released to the soil .

Page  8: Notes

My response to the following prompt:

Based on your understanding of the process of carbon capture involving plants, describe at
least one way that human activities can decrease the effectiveness of the process.

Photosynthesis will be affected if humans continue deforestation. Because fewer plants means less
photosynthesis.

My responses to the following prompts:

Compare and contrast composting and no-till farming.

Do you know people or businesses in your community that compost? What about your
school?
If you do, what do you think motivates people or businesses to compost?
If you do not, what do you think could motivate people or businesses to begin
composting?

1. Compare: composting & no-till farming

Composting is a way to recycle natural materials. Anyone can compost by mixing food scraps &
plants together. Whereas, no-till farming is an unorthodox method that only a few farmers use today.
By not tiling it reduces carbon emissions & allows for the soil to become much heathier.

2. Do businesses / school in comunity compost?

Most businesses and people in the comunity compost because of how widespread + easy using
green garbages has become.

My responses to the following questions:

What do you see happening in your community that makes you feel hopeful about Earth’s
climate future?
Can you cite any examples of policies that demonstrate positive action against climate
change?

1. Ways community tries to reduce the effects of climate change

- Individuals, are starting to change their behaviours to help climate change (reducing plastic use,
recycling, and composting)

-Retailers and manufacturers are being encouraged to reduce the amount of plastic used in
products that they sell.

-The government has invested in expanding public transit in order to reduce the use of individual
cars that release carbon emissions .
