Exhibition
I am really looking forward to our final exhibitions for the year! Please make sure
that your child is preparing their interest project as well as practicing to present their
math goals. Please remember that their math goal is their choice, and should be a goal
that can be presented with confidence.

Academic Accomplishment
Our class has grown leaps and bounds this year! Currently, we are enjoying our Book
Clubs in Reader’s Workshop where we share books we love, as well as read a book
with other students at a similar reading level. This helps students learn to discuss
literature and practice reading skills such as prediction, inference, author’s purpose,
and questioning the author, just to name a few. Plus, it is a way to share the love of
reading. In Writer’s Workshop, we are writing our own fantasy stories (folktale,
fairytale, or a modern fantasy) as we learn more about story elements such as setting,
plot, dialog and character traits. We are also working on grammar and cursive
writing. Our goal is to create a story that is ready to be published and shared online
as a podcast. In math, we are working on multiplication and division skills.
A “Green” Service Learning Project that Helps Haitian Orphans and
Encourages Writing!
Our class has decided to sell Smens and colored
Smencils, (scented pens and scented pencils made
of organic, bio-degradable materials) to benefit
Haitian orphans. Student council members are
designing a sales campaign to share their
knowledge of Haiti and to promote the pens and
pencils which come in many yummy scents and
sell for $2 a piece. Students may purchase
individual pens and colored Smencils for $2, or
get the entire set of either for $20 for their own
use. Scents include: Pink Lemonade, Red
Licorice, Banana Fo Fana, Ninja Berry, Aloha,
Caramel Corn, Black Licorice, Creamsicle,
Passion Fruit, and Mocha. Writing is always more interesting when you have fun
tools! Please consider purchasing a set of Smens or Smencils for your student and
even for others as gifts and graduation presents to celebrate a job well done in the
2010-2011 school year, as well as to encourage their creative and cursive
writing throughout the summer!
