OSMOSIS

Laboratory Activity
Introduction
Osmosis is a property of matter that deals with diffusion, a spreading out of particles
from high concentration to low concentration. It is a movement of water through a semi-
permeable membrane.
Materials
A potato, salt, water, 2 transparent glasses
Procedure’
a. Fill two glasses with water half of it , label A and B.
b. Add 3 tablespoon of salt in glass A and stir it.
c. Slice the potato into fried fry- like pieces.
d. Make your observations on the pieces, pay attention to color , how flexible it is, smell, etc.
e. Write your hypothesis(guess)on how you think might the slices might change by putting
them into the different types of water (glass A with salt , Glass B without salt)
Note (answer before doing the whole thing or experimenting)
Hypothesis:
Thinking the to do experiment is exciting since it is my first time to do this kind of
experiment and I think the Glass A (potato with 3 tables poon salt) differ to Glass B
(potato without salt), because salt may change the texture of the potato slice will be
flimsy and not crisp same with mango when it is bodeful with salt it will become flimsy.
Also the color of the water will be unclear and its amount will be rise after putting 3 table
spoon salt since the salt will become liquid, and maybe the smell of potato will be
stinking. The glass B (without salt), I can say that it is nothing to change, it's more likely
the same to what it is. It will stay fresh and crisp.

f. Soak the slices of potatoes in two glasses and let them sit for for 12 hours.
g. Remove the pieces onto a plate and make your final observation.
RESULTS:

Developmental questions;
1. Which of the two set up is considered an experimental set up ?
 The salt glass A potato slices is regarded as an experimental setup since a lot of
adjustments are necessary compared to the salt-free glass B. And osmosis is underway.
2. Which is the controlled set up ?
 Salt less Glass B, as it is the baseline for comparing the outcomes; this set is treated as no
alterations during and after the experiment.

3. Was your hypothesis correct?

 Yes, however after trial it's more to define

4. Give one situation that a plant is undergoing osmosis. Cite a source

 When a sugar solution and water, top, are separated by a semipermeable membrane. The
solution's large sugar molecules cannot pass through the membrane into the water. Small
water molecules move through the membrane until equilibrium is established, bottom.

1. Crucial in Plant’s Survival

 Usually we water the end of the stump and soil in which they grow when we water plants.
Thus the roots of plants absorb water and the waters pass from the roots to various
sections of plants. Each root is a semi-permeable barrier that enables the transmission of
water molecules from high concentration (soil) to low level (roots). The hair of the roots
is increased and thus the water consumption of plants increases the surface area.
