Study on the Impact of Modular Distance Learning towards Students’ Academic
Performance

Introduction

The face-to-face method involves students and teachers interacting with

each other in person. All of the teaching takes place physically. But our lives have

become more difficult as a result of the COVID 19 pandemic. In our situation right

now, students are affected. The school learning method has been transformed into

distance learning, which is divided into two parts, online and modular distance

learning. Online Distance Learning is the only way to teach students with the use

of technology. Modular Distance Learning is self-study, and it is used for learners

who do not have an internet connection or the necessary equipment to take online

classes. Teachers will provide printed modules or electronic copies that are

applicable to the learners. According to Martinez (2020). Modular Distance

Learning It is a type of distance learning that employs printed and digital Self-

Learning Modules (SLM) focusing on the Department of Education’s most

essential learning competencies (MELCs) (DepEd). It operates by giving students

SLMs, which include their distribution, retrieval, and evaluation. The modules also

include parts on motivation and assessment, which serve as a comprehensive guide

to both teachers’ and students’ desired skills. If possible, the teacher monitors the

learners’ development through home visits.

Despite the pandemic, students continue to learn and pursue their dreams,

even though they are in a situation with a modular system. However, in this type of

educational system, they struggle because they can’t focus on their modules and
Study on the Impact of Modular Distance Learning towards Students’ Academic
Performance

are unable to learn something because some of them are slow learners. As a result,

their academic performance suffers.

According to Garcia (2017). There are a number of factors that influence a

student’s academic performance. Home, school, instructor, and student factors are

only a few. The majority of the factors are related to the home, such as family size,

financial burden, job at home, parental attitude toward education, and parenting

style.

The researchers attempted to find a solution to this study for the purpose of

The Impact of Modular Distance Learning on Students’ Academic Performance.

The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between Modular

Distance learning and students’ academic performance.

Significance of the Study

The researchers will conduct this study to benefit the following:

Students. The study will benefit students because they are the subject of

this research, and it may serve as a basis or guidance for students who are having

difficulty with their modules.

Teachers. This study will benefit all teachers. They could help each other

by putting plans in order to help students with their modules.

Parents. This study will benefit parents by allowing them to determine if

their children are having too much difficulty with their modules and how they may

assist them.

Future Researchers. This research will benefit the future researchers for

them to have references.

Scope and Limitation

The central subjects of this research study will consist of senior high school

students enrolled in S.Y. 2020-2021. The selection of respondents was only limited

since there are lots of students at Madapdap Resettlement Senior High School

(MaRSHS) in Pampanga.

The study only focuses on the impact of Modular Distance Learning and its

relation to the academic performance of the selected students.

gather data. Lastly, box 3 refers to the output of the study which is the impact of

modular learning to the students.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the impact of Modular Distance Learning

towards students Academic Performance of Grade 11 students of Madapdap

Resettlement Senior High School of the City of Madapdap.

Specific Problem:

1. What challenges do the students faced in modular learning?

2. Based from their situation, how do the students adjust to the new set up of

learning specifically modular learning?

3. What are the common advantages and disadvantages of modular distance

learning to the students?

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

According to Oppus- Mercader & Abadiano (2021). The Department of Education

(DepEd) has chosen the modular distance learning modality in response to the

COVID–19 school closures, which prepares the way for converting houses into

classrooms and requiring parents to act as surrogate teachers. In this situation,

parents who are functionally illiterate are forced to instruct their primary school

children at home in order to complete their self-learning modules.

Study on the Impact of Modular Distance Learning towards Students’ Academic
Performance

According to Pe Dangle & Sumaoang (2020). On their study entitled “The

Implementation of Modular Distance Learning in the Philippine Secondary Public

Schools”, The usage of modules encourages self-directed learning. One of the

advantages of employing modules for instruction is that pupils develop greater

self-study or learning skills. Students actively participate in understanding the

concepts provided in the module. They gain a sense of responsibility as they

complete the tasks in the module. The students progress on their own with little or

no help from others.

According to Salamuddin (2021). With the implementation of the new normal

education, stakeholders have experienced difficulties as a result of an alternative

learning delivery – modular distance learning – that has been implemented in order

to facilitate and continue to provide good education in various schools across the

Philippines.

According to Panganiban & Madrigal (2021). One of the educational changes

resulting from the pandemic is modular distance learning. Teaching and learning

are through a time of adjustment as a result of the recent introduction of this type

of learning delivery. The pressing requirement for modular classes has been this

particular problem. It entails planning and arranging things in order to improve

learning.

We examine the modular teaching approach, we can see that it is a more effective,

contemporary, and technology-based teaching method in today’s educational

environment. In recent years, secondary schools have debated whether or not to

Study on the Impact of Modular Distance Learning towards Students’ Academic
Performance

adopt a modular curriculum. The modular approach gives both the distance

teaching mode and the learners more flexibility. (Sejpal, 2013)

Furthermore, Anzaldo (2021). Cites several pros and downsides of modular distant

learning in her work “Modular Distance Learning in the New Normal Education

Amidst Covid-19.” The benefits are numerous. Learning continues when learners

adapt to change, parents recognize their importance in their children’s education,

modular distance learning teaches the learners values as well as the lessons, and

teachers become open-minded to the pandemic’s challenges.

However, the downsides are that not all learners complete their modules, some

parents pamper their children and complete their task instead of them, and parents

have a hard time teaching their children with modules.

According to Trovela (2021). The Perception of Parents and Learners on Modular

Distance learning as contemporary teaching strategy shows effectiveness even

facing different challenges and disadvantage. Challenges that Parents and Students

encounter such as the time management, limited knowledge of the parents on the

topics in the modules, independence in learning, access to other resources for

learning should be given attention and solution to improve more the

implementation of the Modular Distance Learning.

Module learning provides audiences with more opportunities to benefit from social

relationships in order to achieve the highest levels of learning and academic

achievement. (Almutairy, Davies, & Dimitriadi, 2015)

Study on the Impact of Modular Distance Learning towards Students’ Academic
Performance

Module learning has been shown to have a direct positive impact on students’

academic performance; however, the impact is stronger when the educator

facilitates and tracks the conversation back to the main topic. (Wilen-Daugenti,

2009)

According to Malik (2012). Modular teaching is a more complex kind of

programmed learning. In recent years, the use of modules as a teaching-learning

strategy has gained a lot of traction. Instead of using a traditional textbook, the

teacher use teaching modules tailored to personal needs.

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

The researchers will use qualitative phenomenological research because

this study aims to gather data from Grade 11 students who have experience with

Modular Distance Learning. According to Neubauer, Witkop & Varpio (2019).

Phenomenology is a type of qualitative research that examines a person’s living

experiences in the world.

Research Locale

The study will be conducted Madapdap Resettlement Mabalacat City,

Pampanga.

Participants of the Study

Study on the Impact of Modular Distance Learning towards Students’ Academic
Performance

The respondents to the study are grade 11 students who are at the Modular

Distance Learning of Madapdap Resettlement Senior High School in the school

year of 2020-2021.

Research Instrument

For this study, the researchers will conduct an online interview to the

participants. The interview questionnaire consists of questions related to the study.

The researchers will use the information they gather from participants who have

prior experience with Modular Distance Learning.

Data Collection

The researchers will construct questions for an online interview. Then they

will ask the participants for permission to interview them and use all of the data

collected from them for the study. After they ask them for consent, the researchers

will send them the questions for their studies one by one to collect all the data.

After the respondents completed the interview questionnaire, the researchers will

interpret and analyze their responses.

Data Analysis

This will be the data analysis of the gathered information using online

interviews from the participants. The researchers will arrange the participants'

responses by transcribing them, to gain understanding of the subject, then they will

read all the transcribed responses to identify the statement and general themes of

the participants' responses.
