LESSON
A. Physical Fitness is the ability of our body to respond to the many demands of life with extra energy for leisure and
recreational activities.

Components of Physical Fitness

Skill-related fitness enhances one’s performance in athletic or sports events. It is composed of agility, balance, power,
speed, coordination, and reaction time.
Health-related fitness is the ability to become and stay physically healthy.

It is composed of:
1. Body Composition: is the ratio of the body fat to lean body mass, including water, bones muscles, and connective
tissues.
2. Flexibility: refers to the ability of the joints to move through a full range of motion.
3. Muscular Strength: refers to the muscle’s ability to generate force against physical objects.
4. Muscular Endurance: refers to the ability to perform a specific muscular action for a prolonged period of time
5. Cardiovascular endurance: is the ability of the heart, lungs, and blood vessels to deliver oxygen to working muscles
and tissues, as well as the ability of those muscles and tissues to utilize oxygen.

HEALTH RELATED FITNESS

1. Body Composition
BMI - is defined as the body mass divided by the square of the body height, and is universally expressed in units of
kg/m², resulting from mass in kilograms and height in meters.

How to compute your BMI?

Step 1: Measure your weight in kilograms BMI = weight in kilograms
Step 2: Measure your height in meters height in meters²
Step 3: Use the formula

Classification

Example: Paul’s weight is 65 kilograms and his height is 1.70 meter.

BMI = _65 kg_ _65 kg_ BMI = 22.49 kg/m² Classification: Normal
(1.70 m) ² 2.89 m²

2. Flexibility

a. Sit and Reach - is a test of flexibility for the lower extremities particularly the hamstring.

Purpose: to reach forward as far as possible without bending the hamstring.

Equipment: exercise mat or any clean mat, tape measure, meter stick
Procedure:
- sit on the floor with back flat on the wall and feet approximately 12 inches apart without bending your back,
knees, and elbows, place one hand on top of the other and position the hands on the floor.
- after the tester has positioned the zero point of the tape measure, start the test by slowly reaching the farthest
point possible without bending the knees.

b. Zipper Test - is a test of upper arm and shoulder girdle flexibility intended to parallel the strength / endurance
assessment of the region.
Purpose: to touch the finger tips together behind the back by reaching over the shoulder and under the elbow.

Procedure:
- stand erect
- to test the right shoulder, raise your right arm, bend your elbow, and reach down across your back, and try to cross
your fingers over those of your right hand.
- reach with the right hand over the right shoulder and down back as if to pull a zipper or scratch between the shoulder
blades.
- to test the left shoulder, repeat steps with the left hand over the left shoulder.
3. Muscular Strength and Endurance
a. Ninety Degree Push-ups - is a calisthenics and total body exercise that primarily targets the chest and to a lesser
degree also targets the glutes, lower back, shoulders and triceps.
Procedure
- lie down on the mat in standard push-up position: palms on the mat under the shoulders, fingers pointing forward, and
legs straight, and slightly apart, with the toes supporting the feet.
For Boys: Straighten the arms, keeping the back and knees straight. Lower the arms until there is a 90-degree angle at
the elbows. (upper arms are parallel to the floor).
For Girls: With knees touching the mat, straighten the arms, keeping the back straight. Lower the arms until there is a
90-degree angle at the elbows (upper arms should be parallel to the floor).

b. Curl-ups - is also known as a crunch. This test measures abdominal strength and endurance. This test focuses
predominantly on the main abdominal muscle, the rectus abdominus, and may not evaluate the core as a whole.
Procedure
- lie on your back with the knees bent and your feet 12 inches from your buttocks.
- the feet should not be held or rested against an object. The arms must be extended and resting on the thighs.
- complete a slow, controlled curl-up, sliding fingertips along the floor until they have touch the second tapeline.
- the curl-up should be performed at a rate of one every three seconds or 20 curl-ups per minute.
- do not stop or rest while at the bottom position. Perform as many curl-ups as possible without stopping.

4. Cardiovascular Endurance
3 – Minute Step Test - measures your aerobic (cardiovascular) fitness level based on how quickly your heart rate returns
to normal after exercise.
Procedure
- position in front of the step.
- one step consists of 4 beats (up with left foot, up with right foot, down with left foot, down with the right foot.
- at the signal “GO”, step up and down for 3 minutes at a rate of 24 steps per minute.
- immediately after the exercise, stand and relax. Don’t talk.
- locate your pulse. (the first beat is zero).
- count the pulse for 10 seconds. Multiply by 6.

When you were in Grade 7, you learned about holistic health and its role in youth’s growth and development.
You also gained knowledge about nutritional needs and eating problems of adolescents.
You also discovered that mental and emotional health play important roles in the over-all well-being of a person.
And finally, you found out that non-communicable diseases are not caused by pathogens, but rather by how
people live and by the condition those are born with and the hazards around them.
LESSON
LESSON 1: Gender and Human Sexuality
Sexuality as an Important Component of One’s Personality

 A natural and healthy part of life.
 It is everything about being a male or female.

the clothes worn, the friend played with, the roles and
responsibilities at home
 It provides a sense of self-worth when sexual
understanding is positive.

The purpose of gender and human sexuality education

is to promote wholesome family and interpersonal
relationships. It aims to provide knowledge and skills needed
to establish and practice healthful behaviors. Finally, it aims to
produce students who are responsible and have a healthy
sexuality.

focus on your good points and develop your
weaknesses. If you know yourself well, you
will know what you must do to stay healthy.

Sex – is the classification of people as male or female, typically assigned at birth based on the appearance of external
anatomy.

The BIOLOGICAL dimension of sexuality involves our physical appearance especially the development of
physical sexual characteristics.

The PSYCHOLOGICAL dimensions of sexuality often include the cognitive and emotional factors
underpinning sexual response, personality and psychopathology related variables, socio-cognitive variables,
interpersonal/relationship variables and cultural aspects influencing sexual functioning and behavior.

The SOCIO- CULTURAL dimension of sexuality is the sum of the cultural and social influences that affect our
thoughts and actions.
DIMENSIONS OF SEXUALITY
BIOLOGICAL PSYCHOLOGICAL SOCIO-CULTURAL
 Gender  Emotions
 Genetics  Experiences  Religious influences
 Reproduction  Self-concept  Multicultural influences
 Fertility control  Motivation  Socioeconomic influences
 Physical appearance  Expressiveness (income, education)

behaviors

Lesson 3: Factors that affects One’s Attitudes and Practices Related to Sexuality and Sexual Behavior

FAMILY – family values oftentimes determine your own values. Parental support relates to the quality of the parent–
child relationship and includes involvement and encouragement in their child’s life and activities.
RELIGION – Traditional values and religious beliefs are among the most common factors cited by teens as their reason
for remaining sexually abstinent, second only to fear.
MULTI CULTURALISM – Multiculturalism is based on the principle and concept of nation state which emphasize regional,
linguistic, and cultural union.
SOCIO ECONOMIC STATUS – Numerous studies has been found that lower socioeconomic status is associated with risky
sexual behavior.
PEERS – during adolescence is the result of social influence, in particular that of peers, according to the perception of
their attitudes and sexual behavior.
