For many years, humans were unaware of the Solar System and

Mercury is the smallest planet in
the Solar System. It has a diameter
of 4,880 km, making it around
a third of the size of Earth.
Mercury

Haumea
A similar size to Pluto, Haumea is one of the fastest rotating

Pluto a rotation, its extremely fast spinning is thought to be the
reason why the planet has an unusual, elongated shape.
Dwarf
Planets
Makemake
Slightly smaller than Pluto, this dwarf planet was discovered in
2005. It takes 310 Earth years for Makemake to orbit the Sun.
Makemake completes a rotation around its axis every 22.5 hours.
Pronounced “mah-kee-mah-kee”
Dwarf planets are similar to planets, but are often
a lot smaller. In order to be classified as a dwarf planet,
the body must orbit around a star, assume an almost
round shape and have other objects in its orbit,
such as comets and asteroids.
All of these dwarf planets, apart from Ceres,
The five main dwarf planets in the Solar System are orbit the Sun in the Kuiper Belt, an icy region
called Ceres, Pluto, Eris, Haumea and Makemake. that lies beyond the planet Neptune.
Ceres
Located in the asteroid belt between Jupiter
and Mars, this is the closest dwarf planet to
Earth. It was also the first to be visited by a
spacecraft. It measures 950km in diameter.
Pluto
Until recently, Pluto was classified as the ninth
planet in the Solar System. The largest of the
dwarf planets, Pluto is 2,372km in diameter and
